Wu Stuns Isner In Dallas Final Thriller, Becomes First Man From China To Win An ATP Title

Yibing Wu capped his career week taking down American veteran John Isner in thrilling fashion 6-7(4-7), 7-6(7-3), 7-6(14-12) to win the Dallas title, his first of his career.

In a break-less match, there was only five total break points had, with Wu holding two. Dallas resident Isner help a match point in the second and had three more in the third.

The 23-year-old the finale when Isner missed cross court forehand long in just under three hours. Wu connected seven aces, won 69/87 (79%) on first serves, 28/41 (68%) on second serves.


The 39th-ranked Isner cracked 44 aces, won 73/90 (81%) of first serves, 20/28 (71%) on second serves but up just short. He was just two aces away from the 3-set record held by Ivo Karlovic at 2015 Halle.

“It’s a tough one to lose,” said Isner to the ATP. “I don’t know how many match points I had, I’m sure it’s a lot. I swear I thought I won the match a few times.

“It’s like he plays every point the same, so definitely no nerves,” he said. “He gets a ball to hit, he hits it, and on this court it’s hard to hit him a shot he is uncomfortable with.

“He is an unbelievable ballstriker and a very good talent.”

In his first career final, Wu makes history becoming the first player from China to win an ATP singles titles. He’ll also continue up the rankings breaking the Top 60.

“I made history here for my country and for my home,” said Wu during the trophy ceremony. “I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.”

Isner was bidding for his 17th career title. This was his 31st career final.
