Berrettinis Advance At Acapulco; Ruud, Tiafoe, Fritz v Shapovalov Tonight

It was a big day for the Berrettini family in Acapulco. The established Matteo Berrettini got a retirement from 25-year-old Alex Molcan ahead 6-0, 1-0 due to a wrist injury.

Later, Matteo’s younger brother Jacopo made his tour-level debut and would you believe also got a retirement win. Oscar Otte retired down 6-7, 7-6 2-1 with a knee injury!

“It was really a special moment, obviously,” Matteo said to the ATP. “Especially because he was having a tough moment the last couple of years, with COVID and for so many reasons. Also he got injured many times and he couldn’t really perform the way he wanted to. I was really happy for him.”


Elsewhere, Brandon Nakashima ousted Daniel Altmaier in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Elias Ymer squeaked by edged Adrian Mannarino in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Nuno Borges eliminated American Nick Chappell 6-3, 7-6(7-3) and Alex De Minaur advanced.

On tomorrow, in second round play it’s No. 2 Casper Ruud – Taro Daniel, No. 3 Taylor Fritz – Denis Shapovalov, No. 4 Holger Rune – Nuno Borges, No. 6 Frances Tiafoe – Feliciano López, No. 7 Tommy Paul – Michael Mmoh, No. 8 Alex De Minaur – Jacopo Berrettini.

Also, Matteo Berrettini – Elias Ymer and Brandon Nakashima – Mackenzie McDonald.

Shapovalov leads Frit 5-2 in their series.
