Taylor Fritz continued his mastery over good friend and countryman Frances Tiafoe scoring a 6-3, 6-4.

The 5th-ranked Fritz never lost serve breaking serve twice in the match. Fritz broke in the fourth game of the first set for 3-1 and again to start the second. He served out the match at love to improve to 6-1 against Tiafoe.

“I’m happy with how I played the big points,” Fritz told the ATP. “It’s really easy to get frustrated with myself when I’m missing every first serve.

“It’s really easy to get down on myself for that, and I kind of just fought it out, accepted that I’m going to have to play and grind out all these points and I wasn’t going to be getting the amount of free points that I’m used to getting. I’m pretty proud of how I competed through a lot of those long games on my serve.”

Fritz will now face another compatriot in the semifinals against Tommy Paul. Paul, the semifinalist at the Australian Open, eased past Mackenzie McDonald 6-2, 6-2.

Fritz leads Paul 2-1 in their tour-level encounters taking their most clash at 2022 Miami Masters last year.

No. 4 seed Holger Rune had to wait out a 30-minute rain delay up 4-0 then finished off Matteo Berrettini of Italy 6-0, 1-0 at which point the Italian retired with a leg injury. The Dutch teen will now get No. 8 seed Alex De Minaur who dominated Taro Daniel 6-2, 6-2.

“I think it was close to perfection from my side. I was playing so disciplined from the start to the finish,” said Rune to the ATP. “Of course it’s never nice to end this way. I wish Matteo the best. But if I look at my own level, I was super proud of how I handled the situation so I just can’t wait for the semifinal.”

Rune has won both career meetings with De Minaur.
