Baez Leads Santiago SF Field; Chilean Jarry The Home Favorite

In Santiago, Chile, at the Movistar Chile Open in quarterfinals action the No. 3 seed Sebastian Baez eliminated No. 6 seed Laslo Djere in two sets 7-6(7-4), 6-4.

The 35th-ranked Baez won 12/17 (71%) on second serves and broke serve twice in the match. He overcame an early break in the second from 3-1 down to take five of the last six games.

“I feel so comfortable. The people, everything,” the 22-year-old told the ATP. “Every match I always say the same, but it’s real.”


Baez reaches his 5th career semifinal. Djere was hoping to reach his 16th career ATP semifinal.

In the semifinals, Baez will meet countryman Tomas Martin Etcheverry who crushed another Serb, Dusan Lajovic, 6-1, 6-2.

Jaume Munar of Spain moved past Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. He’ll face Nicolas Jarry who topped 31-year-old German Yannick Hanfmann 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Jarry is coming off a semifinal last week in Rio.
