Raducanu Wins In Return, Collins Upset; Sabalenka, Pegula, Gauff Today At Indian Wells

After being out with tonsillitis and hinting at concerns over his wrist, Emma Raducanu returned to the court with a strong win over Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic 6-2, 6-3.

“It was a good match for me to get through,” Raducanu told the crowd. “I think that Danka is an extremely difficult opponent.”

It was Raducanu’s first match since her loss to Coco Gauff at the Australian Open almost two months ago. This is just her third event of 2023.


The battle of former American Grand Slam winners went to Sofia Kenin who rolled Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-1.

The upset of the day, Hungary’s Dalma Galfi eliminated former Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins 6-4, 6-4. Galfi, ranked 80th, connected on six aces and broke serve five times in the match.

Elsewhere, Karolina Muchova topped Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Katerina Siniakova ousted Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Niemeier of Germany in two sets 7-5, 6-4. Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria defeated Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-1. Marketa Vondrousova dusted Rebecca Marino of Canada 6-2, 6-2 and 21-year-old Emma Navarro moved past Caty McNally 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.

The Friday scheduled sees No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka taking on Evgeniya Rodina. Sabalenka won their sole meeting at 2017 Tashkent. No. 3 Jessica Pegula faces Camila Giorgi. Pegula is up on is ahead of Giorgi 4-1 in their tour-level clashes, winning their most recent clash at 2022 Toronto.

No. 6 Coco Gauff faces Spain’s Cristina Bucsa, No. 7 Maria Sakkari will be on upset alert gainst Shelby Rogers and No. 9 Belinda Bencic battles Jil Teichmann.
