Jabeur Reaches Third Straight Charleston Final, Awaits Suspended Pegula-Bencic Winner
Ons Jabeur beat the rains and reached her third straight Charleston final on Sunday topping the 3rd-seeded Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 7-5.
In the break-filled affair, Jabeur got the upper hand. There were 12 total breaks but the Tunisian got the better of it breaking to win both sets.
The Russian Kasatkina got on top early which eventually got her to set points serving for it at 5-4, 40-15. But Jabeur got it back getting things organized after a three hour rain delay at 5-3.
In the second, Jabeur served for the match at 5-3 but failed. However was able to recover and finish things off in straights.
“I have to thank the rain,” Jabeur told the crowd. “It allowed me to talk to my coach a bit and he gave me some advice and reflect on what happened in the first set. My game was there, I just needed to find something small. I was more patient definitely after, I was building my point more and that really helped me.”
Jabeur reaches her 11th career final. She is looking for her fourth career title, first title since ’22 Berlin (d Bencic). It’s Jabeur’s first final since 22 US Open.
Belinda Bencic’s title defense was suspended in her semifinal against American No. 1 Jessica Pegula. Bencic took the first but was down 4-2 in the second set breaker before rains put an end to play for Saturday. That match will resume on Sunday.
