Swiatek, Sabalenka Cruise Into Madrid Masters Final Showdown
Top seeds and tournament favorites Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka cruised into the finals of Madrid making for a super showdown on Saturday.
Swiatek wrapped up the day crushing Veronika Kudermetova 6-1, 6-1 in just 69 minutes.
Swiatek is now 9-0 on on the year on clay and has won 27 of her last 28 on the surface.
Sabalenka was on in the daytime and the former champion rolled past Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 to return to the final.
The Belarussian was broken once while Sakkari struggled on second serve winning just 32%. Sabalenka broke at the start of both sets to pace the win, her tour-leading 28th of 2023.
“I think it was actually my best match of the tournament,” Sabalenka said to the WTA. “I started really well. Then Maria came back.
“But mentally I was staying really strong. I knew that she’s going to fight for every point. It didn’t, how to say, didn’t destroy me that she came back. I was still playing, I was still fighting for every point.
“Yeah, I’m super happy with the level that I played, and especially with my mental game, I would say. I’m more happy with my mental game.”
Swiatek leads Sabalenka 5-2 in their series including a win last month in the Munich final.
The final is on Saturday.
