It was wild day in Halle Friday for quarterfinal action. Top seed Daniil Medvedev fell to Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(7-3).

The 35-year-old Agut lost just 7 points on second serve and broke the Russian twice in the match including at 5-6 in the first set.

Medvedev managed 12 aces but couldn’t covert a break chance at 4-all in the second, then was outplayed in the breaker.

In seven tour-level contests, Bautista Agut now has the better of Medvedev 5-2.

“I think to beat Daniil on this court, you have to play really good,” Bautista Agut said. “I did not feel good some months this year, but I kept working hard. I know tennis is sometimes very difficult, but today it showed up that I’ve been working hard. It showed up that a lot of things, I have been working on and I’m very happy because I played very good tennis.”

Bautista Agut makes his 45th career semifinal. Medvedev was vying for his 44th semifinal.

No. 3 Andrey Rublev sent off stopped the streaking Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor rallying from a set down 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In the match, Rublev connected 13 aces, was broken three times but broke serve four times in the match.

Griekspoor falls to 0-9 against Top 10 players and 0-2 against Rublev who’s into his 31st career semifinal.

Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik advanced when 4th-seeded Jannik Sinner retired down 7-5, 2-0 due to an undisclosed injury.

Two-time finalist Alexander Zverev kept German hopes alive dismissing Nicolas Jarry of Chile in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.

“I am unbelievably happy, especially on grass he is so dangerous. I am happy to be in the semifinals,” Zverev said to the ATP. “I am happy to be competing on grass courts again.

“It is very human not to play at the same level for over two hours. You have to deal with the tough moments the best as you can and I think I did ok today.”

Zverev will now face Bublib though the Kazakh has won two of three. And Bautista Augt takes on Rublev. The two have spit eight meetings with the Spaniard winning this year in Adelaide.
