Sinner Sinks Sonego In Halle, Hurkacz Upset; Mevedev v RBA, Zverev v Jarry In QFs
In Halle in second round action fourth-seeded Jannik Sinner battled pas Lorenzo Sonego 6-7(4-7), 6-4, 6-4.
Sinner finished with 10 aces, saved all eight break points faced as he’s still perfect against his countrymen 8-0 and now 2-0 against Sonego.
“It was a tough match for sure,” said Sinner to the ATP. “He had a lot of chances, me also in the first set. I made a couple of mistakes in the tie-break but that can happen. On grass courts it’s never easy, and the way I reacted, especially mentally, I guess I did a good job. Obviously playing against him is never easy.”
Tallon Griekspoor continued his good run shocking 2022 champion Hubert Hurkacz in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-8).
Griekspoor, ranked 29th, has now won his last seven matches and today saved a match point in the breaker.
Earlier, Andrey Rublev advanced past Yannick Hanfmann 7-6(6), 6-3 and Alexander Bublik knocked out Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets.
In quarterfinal play tomorrow, No. 1 Daniil Medvedev clashes with No. 8 Roberto Bautista Agut. Bautista Agut has won four of six tour-level contests when facing Medvedev. Medvedev won their most recent collision at Astana in 2022.
Rublev faces the streaking Griekspoor having defeated the Dutchman in their lone meeting at Doha earlier this year.
Sinner takes on Alexander Bublik sporting a 3-0 lead about the Kazakh.
And 2-time finalist Alexander Zverev takes on Nicolas Jarry and the two have split four contests on tour. Jarry came out ahead in their most recent meeting in the 2023 Geneva SF.
