Cachin Cashes In First ATP Title In Gstaad, Rallies Past Ramos-Vinolas
On the red clay in Gstaad, Switzerland in the EFG Swiss Open finals Pedro Cachin won his first career ATP title topping 35-year-old Albert Ramos-Vinolas from a set down 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.
“It really means a lot,” Cachin told atptour.com. “I fought my whole life for this. I left home when I was very young to try and be a tennis player. I never imagined that I’d win an ATP event. As you grow, you see that you are good and you can aspire to win things and between leaving home and today, a lot of things have happened, a lot of injuries, a lot of changes in my life. And here I am. I worked hard. I think I really deserve it and I’m very happy.”
The 28-year-old Cachin dropped the first before cruising in the second, and then lost a break lead in the middle of the third only to break for 6-5 and serve it out.
Cachin finished with seven aces, tossed in five doubles and broke five of 12 times including twice in the third.
“In the beginning of the match I was a little nervous and made a few mistakes. It was the first time I had played against a lefty in the tournament but I stayed there,” Cachin said. “I tried to be positive, more aggressive and go to the net. In a final it is difficult to play like this the whole match. I am very, very happy.”
Cachin, who trained a lot on Spain, was appearing in his first career final. Ramos Vinolas was eyeing his 5th career title in his 12th final.
The Argentine didn’t drop a set until the final, and scored wins over Roberto Bautista, Taro Daniel and Jaume Munar.
