Not Ready Rafael Nadal Withdraws From Indian Wells
Rafael Nadal spent nearly two weeks in the U.S., but unfortunately never was able to play a real match.
After playing just one event in 2023, the former No. 1 has only played one event in 2024 as his left hip was injured in Brisbane and today he announced he would have to withdraw from the Indian Wells Masters because his body is not up to the challenge.
He posted on twitter, “It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament at Indian Wells.
“Everyone knows how much I love this place and how much I love to play here. That’s also one of the reasons why I came very early to the desert to practice and try to get ready.
“I have been working hard and practicing and you all know I took a test this weekend but I don’t find myself ready to play at the highest level at such an important event.
“It is not an easy decision, it’s a tough one as a matter of fact but I can’t lie to myself and lie to the thousands of fans.
I will miss you all and I am sure the tournament will be a great success”
Nadal was in Las Vegas over the weekend to play a lucrative exhibition against Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal was far from full strength with his movement and power both compromised, but it was an exo. However, as he said, he underwent a “test” and found there to be some issue.
Nadal posted videos of practicing but there were no hints of injuries or ailments, and he played Las Vegas without issue. So was there something that happened in that match or something upon returning to Indian Wells?
He wasn’t scheduled for Miami, but will now have more than a full month to prepare for the clay season which begins in Monte Carlo.
The good news is is that he has so much time. The bad news is is that he doesn’t have that much time. Nadal turns 38 in June and there’s a chance we’ve seen him play his last hard court match. Hopefully, not his last match.
