Quarterfinals berths will be on the line Sunday at the US Open. Americans once again take center stage. Coco Gauff and Emma Navarro collide for a third time.

Gauff beat Navarro at the start of the year en route to her Auckland win. Navarro was able to return the favor on Centre Court Wimbledon in the fourth round as Gauff donated a flurry errors off the forehand.

“In my own head I’ll probably always be under the radar just because I don’t give social media and that kind of stuff too much attention. I have a really grounded group of people around me that keeps me grounded. So in my head, I’ll always just be kind of ‘Regular Emma’, ‘Under-the-Radar Emma.'”

In the evening, it’s the first meeting between good friends Frances Tiafoe and Alexei Popyrin. Both come off huge wins. Tiafoe won in five while Popyrin stunned the defending champion Djokovic in four convicing sets.

Qinwen Zheng and Donna Vekic meet in a rematch of their gold medal affair.

In the first match on Ashe, Grigor Dimitrov and Andrey Rublev battle for an eighth time. Rublev has won three of their last four meetings and based on rank, is the slight favorite.

“When I was a junior, I liked him as a player,” Rublev told the US Open. “At that time, he was something different from the Big Three, Big Four. I liked to watch his matches.”

“Grigor is an unbelievable player, a great friend. We’ve had many matches. We’ll see in the moment. It will be who is more ready.”

On Armstrong, Taylor Fritz faces Casper Ruud hoping for a first win over the Norweigian and a return to the quarterfinals. Ruud is 2-0 with one win at the French this year and the other at the ATP Finals in 2022.

Alexander Zverev also lurks, he takes on the resurgent Brandon Nakashima. And women’s favorite Aryna Sabalenka meets Elise Mertens.

tennismonger Says:

Nicely done, Big Foe! But the semis (his 2022 result) still seem so far away w/Grigor in his path…I’d say that’s a winnable match for either guy. Game-wise, I think Grigor has the edge but Francis has the home court advantage for sure ad HE IS PUMPED. As usual, we’ll see.

Tommy will put Jannik’s hip to the test today…with that question mark floating around feels like the tourney is wide open at the moment.

Sinner did ok

tennismonger Says:

^ Yeah, those 1st 2 sets were a little tight for Sinner but he got it done. Tommy hung in there but looked like someone trying to hang on to a runaway tiger at times…Love Tommy’s game, but he’s like a sniper but w/no heavy artillery…it seems thata lot has to go his way to win the bigger matches.

Sinners’s match against Meddy might be his toughest one, again, we’ll see which Meddy shows up later.
