Roger Federer Tabs Novak Djokovic As The Australian Open Favorite [Video]
Conspicuously out of the news cycle thus far in 2013, Roger Federer returned to the spotlight today after arriving at the Australian Open. The tournament released this video giving fans a first glimpse of the 17-time Grand Slam champion this season.
“Love being in Australia… so excited to be back for the Australian Open! Time to go to bed!” Federer posted on his Facebook page.
The Swiss was flying in from Singapore where he took part in a Credit Suisse sponsor function. (Q&A video below.) During the event, Federer said three-time winner Novak Djokovic is the tournament favorite for the Australian Open. He also said that Rafael Nadal’s absence will create opportunities for other, lower ranked players.
On the topic of the biggest changes in the game (20 min mark), Federer said it’s the strings, adding that nowadays most players would rather hit a passing shot than a volley.
In the Q&A, Federer said playing at night in Melbourne makes the court 30% slower than the day. Food for thought.
Federer decided not to play any pre-Australian Open, and that’s because, he says, practice has become more of a priority these days.
The four-time Australian Open champion will be the No. 2 seed when the tournament begins a week from Monday.
