How did he go from dethroning Nole last year as #1 to winning only one title this year (Halle, ATP 250 at that)?

@WTF There are several possible explanations for that, but I have no idea which is the closest to the truth.

He expended a lot of time and energy on the South America Gillette Tour, which hampered preparations for the beginning of the year. He picked up a back injury in Indian Wells, took too much time off, went in and played hardly any matches on clay, failed to gather momentum in the summer, saw his back injury return in July/August, tested out a new racket and failed, and this culminated in an early US Open exit, after which point he has finally slowly begun to improve his play.

The work that Federer does off-season this time around will be very very important for 2014 – I heard that he has cancelled all of his scheduled tours and substituted in more training time.

But my real happiness will come with roger winning titles beating top guys….I am actually looking forward to the start of 2014 whr I believe fed will start afresh with a positive mind and less pressure to defend….”touch-wood” ;)

You know WTF and GILES (God you really can’t leave me alone can you?). It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that Federer was talking about his tennis at the start of the year, he could have mentioned the Australian Open to be fair, where he reached the Semi Finals and also he did well in Dubai, clearly the GOAT was comparing his level of play then, to the mediocre year he has had since then, and now, he can feel that he is “almost there” once again.

All hail Federer I would say. Good luck to Roger to keep on improving.

WTF, just a gentle nudge mate, it was only in 2012 that Roger won wimbledon, that isn’t really that long ago, so might be a good idea for you to eat a bit of humble pie, see what it tastes like.

@Turner – How on earth is that disrespecting his fellow competitors? All he’s saying is that he feels good about his game for the first time in several months (never said he was ‘playing his best tennis’). He picked Dubai as an example because he played there right near the beginning of the year. Incidentally, Del Potro also commented that he (DelPo) thinks he’s playing “fantastic tennis” too.
Not sure where the arrogance is there – everyone says these kind of things…

As for Federer, ‘since Dubai’ might actually refer to his vacation plus light training in Dubai after the US open :-). You are bound to feel good on a vacation. So he might actually be 100% correct albeit in a trivial sense. He was in Dubai in September, then he goes to Shanghai and runs into Monfils, and then heads to Basel.

Roger Federer pulled a fast one on all of us, that’s what I think.

For me Roger is the greatest player ever who played the tennis game. It’s always good to see him play and win and we are going to see so much more of Federer in the future; he is going to win more grand slam tournaments.

It’s a combination of how many grand slams have you won, how many tournaments have you won, how many years you were number one, and he’s got all those combinations. The body of work is phenomenal and now he has got that French Open and I think he can just go on and sip Margaritas for the rest of his life.

Regardless if he won there or not, he goes down as the greatest ever. This just confirms it. Now that he has won in Paris, I think it just more solidifies his place in history as the greatest player that played the game, in my opinion. I’m a huge Laver fan, and he had a few years in there where he didn’t have an opportunity to win majors. But you can’t compare the eras. And in this era, the competition is much more fierce than Rod’s.

Hawkeye, do u have any reference where some of the past players have crowned rafa the “goat”? I don’t think no one has exactly said that. Some said he could surpass federer/ could be the goat. But no one has claimed that rafa is the best ever. I see its only u who is jumping n shouting rafa the goat rafa the boat

Djokovic was scarily good against Stan Wawrinka today. Winning the match so easily 6-1, 6-4 given all the tough battles they’ve had this year shows how confident he is heading into the Semis and Finals, and of course the World Tour Finals.

nice win for fed. even though this year wasn’t stellar for roger, i agree that he is playing the best tennis of the year in the past couple of weeks. he looks sharp, serve is lethal, movement unhampered and mental state very focused. i’m looking forward to seeing him go against nadal or novak in this state of mind.

It is just a privilege to watch Roger when he is on song. It is really exhilirating stuff to watch him on court dancing around, retrieving balls with such ease and hitting shots with insane angles and complementing with those exquisite drop shots stamping his class and mastery all over. Against Del Potro yesterday, I watched that flashes of brilliance of Roger on court and I was excited. After some time, he is starting to play well and I can see the sting in his serve too. Hope, he can keep up this level of play. If he continues in this form, he has chances against any player.
