Defending Champ Venus Rolls in Opener; Wimbledon Notes
No. 3 seed Venus Williams began her title defense on Tuesday at Wimbledon with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Stefanie Voegele.
ADHEREL
“It was pretty straightforward,” Williams said. “I really enjoyed being out there. You know, it’s a special moment when you walk back as defending champion on that court, throw those balls up for that first point. It’s a really great feeling.”
Other Top 10-seeded winners were (1) Dinara Safina over Lourdes Dominguez Lino 7-5, 6-3, (5) Svetlana Kuznetsova edging Akiko Morigami 6-3, 7-6, (6) Jelena Jankovic topping Julia Goerges 6-4, 7-6, (7) Vera Zvonareva struggling past Georgie Stoop 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, and (9) Caroline Wozniacki coming back to beat 38-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm 5-7, 6-3, 6-1.
Date Krumm led 7-5, 3-1 before tiring and cramping.
“I knew she did well on grass before. I kind of knew what to expect from her, but it’s just different from what I’m used to,” Wozniacki said. “Early on she was hitting really flat and I had to get under the ball a lot. She took advantage of that when I was playing very short, coming to the net and playing very well. I know why she did well on grass before, for sure.”
Former No. 1 and current No. 13 seed Ana Ivanovic received a scare before surviving a meeting with Lucie Hradecka 5-7, 6-2, 8-6.
Among the parade of seeded three-set winners were (15) Flavia Pennetta over Nuria Llagostera Vives 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, (17) Amelie Mauresmo felling Melinda Czink 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, (18) Samantha Stosur surviving Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, and (20) Anabel Medina Garrigues over Marta Domachowska 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Failing to escape upsets were (25) Kaia Kanepi falling to Carla Suarez Navarro, (29) Sybille Bammer tripped up by American Melanie Oudin, Russian Vera Dushevina clipping (22) Alize Cornet, (30) Agnes Szavay falling to Kirsten Flipkens, and (32) Anna Chakvetadze succumbing to Sabine Lisicki.
Matches to look for on Wednesday at the All England Club are (24) Maria Sharapova vs. Gisela Dulko, Aussie Jarmila Groth vs. (2) Serena Williams, French comer Aravane Rezai vs. (4) Elena Dementieva, (16) Jie Zheng vs. Daniela Hantuchova, former Indian sensation Sania Mirza vs. (28) Sorana Cirstea, Italian veteran Francesca Schiavone vs. teen screamer Michelle Larcher De Brito, and Israel’s Shahar Peer vs. (10) Nadia Petrova.
