Andy Murray Begins Summer Hardcourt Season In Washington This Week [Video]

After a 4-month absence, Andy Murray returns to his favorite hardcourt this week in Washington. Murray, who is making just his second appearance at the event since reaching the 2006 final, is upbeat as his begins his summer swing.
“I haven’t hit a ball on a hard court since Miami,” said Murray. “That’s in March so it’s been four or five months. It’s a while, especially coming from the grass. This morning was the first time I’ve felt more comfortable on the courts. I’m starting to get used to them again. The conditions are humid. It takes a long time to get used to it, which is why I arrived on Tuesday. It’s the earliest I’ve arrived for any event the whole year.”
Ranked No. 3, Murray is 48-7 on the season with three titles (Queen’s, Madrid, Munich). Since the start of March, Murray has won 36 of his last 40 matches, losing only to the two guys ranked above him: Roger Federer at Wimbledon and Novak Djokovic three times at the French, Miami and Indian Wells.
The top-seeded Murray will open against Teymuraz Gabashvili in his first match on Wednesday evening. US Open champion Marin Cilic, Kei Nishikori and John Isner are also in the field, featuring 9 of the Top 20.
“It’s a strong field,” Murray added. “It’s maybe the strongest cut-off ever they said. It’s going to be a tough event. I play my first match against Becker or Gabashvili and I’ll try to get a little video of that match and get ready for it. They’re two big hitters, right-handed, with double-handed backhands. Becker normally plays well on the American hard courts and Gabashvili has won a lot of matches this year.”
Murray hasn’t won a US title since 2013 Miami. Last night he played doubles with Daniel Nestor but lost to Bopanna/Mergea.
