Ailing Roger Federer Didn’t Think He Would Win A Set Today In Rome!
Roger Federer surprised himself today Rome. The Swiss has been battling a back injury the last few weeks and speculation was strong that Federer would make it on the court for his match against 19-year-old Alexander Zverev. But the Swiss not only played, he won 63, 75 over the German. A surprise because afterward Federer admitted that he didn’t think he’d win a set.
“I was expecting to lose in straight sets today,” Federer said. “That was the mindset going in, so to win in straights is actually a really big surprise to me.”
Next for Federer is Dominic Thiem. But Federer isn’t sure if his back and body will allow.
“I don’t know how I’m going to feel tomorrow,” Federer said. “It’s baby steps right now, So to even think of tomorrow is already a big ask.”
Federer is hopeful the decision he made this week playing is the right one.
“Looking ahead for next few weeks, regardless if I’m going to play tomorrow or not, this was something I feel like I needed to do to get a sense of where I’m at,” Federer said. “It would have been easy not to play and then just be unsure how I was going to feel in Paris.
“So at some point, you have to go out there and see how it feels, and I’m happy I was able to play a full match without any setbacks.”
