“It was a very high standard of tennis,” Halep said. “Even if I won the first set 6-0, I knew the second one was going to be tougher. She’s always a very tough opponent. I’m really happy with the way I played today.”
In the fourth round she will meet No. 21 seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who upset No. 14 seed Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-4.
No. 11 Caroline Wozniacki also ended the run of unseeded American Catherine Bellis, beating the teen 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
“I think it’s important just to keep your head down and not think much, honestly,” said Wozniacki on fighting through in three sets. “Everyone sees you as a target and everyone wants to find a way to beat you.”
In the fourth round she will meet No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova.
“I look forward to it,” Woz said. “We have had a lot of crazy matches in the past, and some thrillers. She obviously loves the clay. I would give a little bit of the favoritism to her, but at the same time I feel like I have been playing well.”
Also earning a fourth round meeting were two Frenchwomen. No. 28 seed Caroline Garcia will meet unseeded Alize Cornet after Garcia beat Hsieh Su-Wei, and Cornet upset No. 9 seed Aggie Radwanska 6-2, 6-1.
“I’d only beaten her once before,” Cornet said of Radwanska. “I couldn’t predict I’d be able to beat her in straight sets on this amazing venue. I tried not to let her dictate the points because Radwanska can pull you all over the place. My movement was good and so was my mindset.”
Matches to look for on Sunday Roland Garros include (8) Kuznetnova vs. (11) Wozniacki, (10) Venus Williams vs. (30) Timea Bacsinszky, and (4) Garbine Muguruza vs. (13) Kristina Mladenovic.
