With Rafael Nadal winning the US Open and then Beijing last week, Roger Federer understands that the odds are stacked of him passing the Spaniard for the 2017 No. 1 ranking.

“I can’t play more than I’m already playing,” Federer said of his chase. “I can only control my draw. I can’t control how well he’s playing. Because he’s playing so well, it’s going to make things more difficult.

“But I know that if I want to finish world No. 1 I’ve got to win here and World Tour Finals and Paris and Basel, whatever it may be. It becomes more and more unlikely, which is totally fine, because I never entered this season with the goal being world No. 1.

“It was really unfortunate for me that I hurt myself in Montreal, because then that would have been a cool race maybe going on in Cincinnati, even if I would have lost, and then into the US Open feeling better.

“Unfortunately, it never happened. So I was kind of close, but not really because I was hurt. It’s all good, you know. I’m just going to plan well, just going to try to have a strong finish to the season and see what happens, but clearly I’m aware it’s highly unlikely at this point.”

Federer is in action Wednesday in Shanghai against Diego Schwartzman. Nadal opens against American Jared Donaldson.

Daniel Says:

Fed doen´t need to think to far ahead. Goin by tennis players Moto, one match at a time. First he has to win his matches and win Shangai, than concern about what Nadal is doing.

Both won today, but Nadal much easier.

Anyone saw Fed play? Was at work and couldn’t watch. Saw last 2 games of Nadal match while chaning and he was much more agressive shortening points and going for winner from both wings.

Daniel,

Roger needed to rely on his serve to overcome Diego Schwartzman in the Shanghai Masters this afternoon. That is the view of Sky Sports pundit and Andy Murray’s former coach Mark Petchey.

Federer beat Schwarzman in straight sets in his round of 32 tie.

The Argentine took Federer to a tie-break in the first set but the Swiss legend stood firm to win in straight sets.

Seems Fed was a bit rusty, but, a win is a win!

Petchey says Federer’s serve was just too strong for Schwarzman.

“That was a good contest,” Petchey said on Sky Sports.

Daniel Says:

Thanks madmax, hope he improves gopingo forward. Dolog is too inconsistant to bothe rhim I think.

This weekend is a holiday here so I will be able to watch a lot of matches.

Humble Rafa Says:

I am glad the Arrogant One realizes that the No.1 race for the year has ended.

Petchy’s brain was sold and ebay a while back for a penny.
