Roger Federer: I Would Teach My Kids A 2-Handed Backhand…It’s Easier!

Roger Federer has one of the greatest single-handed backhands of all-time, but the Swiss said Friday in Shanghai that he would teach his kids a 2-handed backhand.

“Moving now on forward we will see double-handed backhands predominantly, which is how I would teach my kids, as well, to play tennis,” Federer said. “I think it’s just easier. Double-handed backhand, you can always fight a wrong position with the left hand, let’s say, if you’re a right-hander. On the return it’s the same thing. You might have a little bit less reach, but you can also let go and still reach it.

“I think a double-hander is the way to go, but I hope it’s not a dying breed,” he added. “I think it just looks nice, a one-handed backhand.”

The question came up in regards to Denis Shapovalov’s 1-hander.

“It’s nice to see Denis also keeping that alive and same with Thiem and young guys coming up that it’s still going. But I think we will always be outnumbered from this point moving forward. Unfortunately Björn Borg had too big of an impact on this game. He just doesn’t know it sometimes.”

Federer is one of 10 1-handed backhands in the Top 50, and there are four in the Top 10: Federer, stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem and Grigor Dimitrov.

And with youngsters like Shapovalov, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Akira Santillan on the rise, the 1-hander is not going away any time soon.
