Stephens Wins First Title In Nearly Four Years In Guadalajara
Sloane Stephens is back in the win column for the first time in nearly four years, defeating Marie Bouzkova 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 to win the Guadalajara title in Mexico Sunday night.
Stephens didn’t face a Top 95 player en route to the title, but beat those she faced including a tough customer in the Czech today. She dropped a set in her last three matches.
Bouzkova, who was seeking her first title in her third final, led with breaks in the first two sets, but only managed one set. An inside-out forehand winner sealed it for the former US Open champion.
For the 28-year-old Stephens, it’s her seventh career title but first since 2018 Miami where she topped Jelena Ostapenko.
She’ll also see her ranking jump from No. 57 back into the Top 40, and she could get a seeding at the upcoming Masters events at Indian Wells and Miami.
