Novak Wins, Hartfield Ousts Almagro at Stuttgart

Jiri Novak notched his 330th career win on Tuesday by dimissing Simone Bolelli 7-6(4), 6-1 at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.


Novak hit 14 aces and broke Bolelli in two of six opportunities in the one-hour, 19-minute match. The 31-year-old Czech will next meet No.3 seed David Ferrer.

Three South American qualifiers booked spots in the third round. Argentina's Diego Hartfield upset No.10 seed Nicolas Almagro 6-7(2), 7-6(1), 7-5 in two hours, 42 minutes. Coutryman Diego Junqueira stunned No.14 Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-4 while Nicolas Lapentti from Ecuador defeated No.7 Florent Serra 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-2.

Qualifier Juan Martin Del Potro posted his career second ATP-level match win when he defeated Andrei Pavel 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in one hour, 59 minutes.

Del Potro, a 6'5" 17-year-old from Tandil, Argentina, is currently No.147 in the INDESIT ATP Ranking (the youngest player inside the Top 200).

Another Argentine to advance was Juan Monaco, who defeated Michael Berrer 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-4 in two hours and 45 minutes. He will next face No.6 Kristof Vliegen.

Mariano Zabaleta, also from Argentina, overcame Alexander Waske 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to post his first ATP-level match win in 2006. The former World No.21 holds a 190-193 career record and has claimed three ATP titles (the last one in Bastad 2004).
