Germans Roll Tuesday at ATP KitzbuhelPosted on July 26, 2006 Denis Gremelmayr knocked out Rotterdam finalist and No. 14 seed Christophe Rochus 7-5, 6-1 in just 69 minutes to join German compatriot and No. 13 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Generali Open third round Tuesday.
Gremelmayr won 70 of 117 points in total, hitting six aces and breaking the Rochus serve on four of six opportunities. He awaits the winner of either defending champion and No. 4 seed Gaston Gaudio or Juan Monaco. Monaco advanced past Italian qualifier Leonardo Azzaro 6-4, 6-2. Kohlschreiber overcome Australian qualifier Peter Luczak 7-6(3), 7-5 in one hour and 40 minutes. Luczak broke Kohlschreiber just once, despite holding ten break point opportunities in total. Kohlschreiber nullified the threat with 11 aces, winning 36 of 42 points on first serve. Kohlschreiber improved his 2006 season record to 20-13 and will hope to reach his sixth quarterfinal when he plays either No. 3 seed Jarkko Nieminen or qualifier Sergio Roitman. The 22-year-old reached the Bastad semifinals two weeks ago and has reached the last eight in Adelaide, Las Vegas, 's-Hertogenbosch and Munich. Jurgen Melzer, a 6-3 6-4 winner over Spain?s Oscar Hernandez, will meet No. 2 seed Tommy Robredo in their fifth career meeting Wednesday. Robredo beat the Austrian 7-5, 6-4 in Adelaide at the start of the season. Andrei Pavel awaits the winner in the third round. The No. 16 seed made it two career wins out of two against Marcos Daniel winning their second round clash 6-4, 6-4. Pavel beat the Brazilian earlier this season in Poertschach. Former World No. 6 Nicolas Lapentti, who set up a second round meeting with top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko with a 7-6(10) 6-3 win over Tomas Zib. Mariano Zabaleta will play No. 7 seed Juan Ignacio Chela, as first round opponent Rainer Schuettler retired with a right elbow injury while trailing Zabaleta 6-1.
