Querrey, Fish Win Monday in New HavenPosted on August 22, 2006 Eighteen-year-old American Sam Querrey served 11 aces on the way to upsetting the veteran Spaniard Alberto Martin in the first round of the Pilot Pen Tennis Open in New Haven. Martin, who turned 28 yesterday, only won 22% of points on Querrey's first serve in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat. It was only Querrey's fifth ATP career win, and he will now face the No.15 seed, Robin Soderling, in the second round.
Fellow American Mardy Fish booked his place in the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 win over the 33-year-old Italian Davide Sanguinetti. Fish saved every one of the eight break points he faced in the 70-minute victory and will now face fifth seed David Ferrer in the next round. The in-form Ferrer has now won eight out of his past 10 matches. In a big-serving battle between Greg Rusedski and Ivo Karlovic, Rusedski came through in three sets, two of which were tie-breaks. There were no fewer than 32 aces served in the 7-6(2), 6-7(7), 6-2 victory for Rusedski, who claimed his first win on the circuit since beating Stefano Galvani at the ATP Masters Series Rome in May. The British No.3 will now play fourth seed Jarkko Nieminen in the second round. World No.57 Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo progressed into the second round with a straight sets victory over Belgian Christophe Rochus. Ramirez Hidalgo, who prevailed 6-3, 7-5 in 80 minutes, now has the unenviable task of playing top seed James Blake in the next round. The win improved the Spaniard's 2006 record to 18-13. Cincinnati doubles winner Max Mirnyi came through his first round test against Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 7-6(6). Mirnyi, who is from Belarus, picked up his 18th victory on the singles circuit this year and will now play the No.10 seed Agustin Calleri in the second round. Frenchman Gilles Simon defeated World No. 74 Justin Gimelstob in the final match Monday. Gimelstob was beaten 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in a match lasting 133 minutes. The 21-year-old Simon took his 2006 match record to 20-17, and will now face eighth seed Olivier Rochus in the second round. -- ATP |
