Roger Federer Falls to Fernando Gonzalez at Tennis Masters Cup; Roddick Wins

Posted on November 12, 2007

Fernando Gonzalez stunned World No. 1 Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6(1), 7-5 in opening round robin play at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. Also winning on Monday was Andy Roddick, who scored a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over the embattled Nikolay Davydenko.

The win by Gonzalez snapped a personal 10-match losing streak to the Swiss, and avenged a straight-set loss to Fed in the Australian Open final.

"It feels good. After 10 times, it's my turn now," Gonzo said. "Now that I beat him, the group is very close because I still have two matches really hard to play, and nobody knows what is going to happen."

"I think my best match of ever was in the Australian Open against Tommy Haas in the semifinals", the Chilean added. "But today I play really good. I mean, the last two games were in the top of my level."

The loss for Federer was just his third is his last 25 Tennis Masters matches. It also marked the first time since 2003 that Fed's lost two consecutive matches (he lost to Nalbandian in his last match in Paris).

"It's a tough loss because I thought actually I played pretty good," Federer said. "To start off the round robin matches with a loss is something I haven't always had to deal with, because usually you lose and you leave. But it okay. Maybe it's the only loss you can have during a season and come back and win a tournament. I hope I can play well in the next two matches."

While Federer fell, Roddick looked impressive improving his perfect record against Davydenko to 5-0. The American played well behind solid backhand and net play.

"Those shots are something that I try to practice a lot," Roddick said of his backhand/volley. "But I think for the first time this year I've actually had an extended period of time, because of my injuries, to practice. I haven't been healthy enough to play in a tournament. But because I haven't been able to move as much, maybe I've been able to hit backhands standing still and volleys. So maybe that helped a little."

On schedule Tuesday are Rafael Nadal v. David Ferrer and Richard Gasquet v. Novak Djokovic.
