Ferrero Wins 1st Final Since Holding No. 1 Ranking Posted on April 12, 2009
Former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero recaptured his claycourt glory days on Sunday, beating Frenchman Florent Serra 6-4, 7-5 for the ATP Casablanca title.
It was the first title for the Spaniard since he reached No. 1 in 2003. Ferrero ironically made his ATP debut at Casablanca as a 19 year old.
"This is a special tournament for me," Ferrero said. "Ten years ago I played my first ATP tournament here and now I'm back winning the title. I'm very happy, it was a great week for me."
The 29-year-old Ferrero had competed in 110 tournaments since last lifting a trophy. During that span he finished runner-up in events at 2004 Rotterdam, 2005 Barcelona and Vienna, 2006 Cincinnati, 2007 Costa do Sauipe and 2008 Auckland.
"It is very important for my confidence that I won this tournament," Ferrero said. "This helps a lot coming back from an injury."
Ferrero improved to 9-7 career in claycourt finals, winning his first clay title since the 2003 French Open. His win will move him back into the Top 100 on the ATP Rankings.
Serra drops to 2-1 in career finals. "It was a great week for me but I'm a bit disappointed today," Serra said. "I was nervous at the beginning and Juan Carlos was playing really well. This city is special for me since my father was born here and I dedicate this final to him."
