Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will meet for the 21st time in their long rivalry Sunday for the 2010 Madrid Mutua Madrilena Tennis Masters title.

The two superstars of tennis haven’t played each other since Federer upset Nadal in front of his home fans in Madrid a year ago.

But Nadal leads the overall series 13-7 winning five of the last six meetings with the only loss in Madrid during that stretch.

On clay Nadal leads Federer 9-2, losing at 2007 Hamburg and 2009 Madrid.

In tournament finals Nadal again holds the edge winning 11 of 16 career meetings in title matches. Their 17th title match tomorrow will put them ahead of the 16 Agassi-Sampras and Becker-Edberg played, but still behind Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe’s 20 finals.

15 Comments for Roger Federer v. Rafael Nadal Head-to-Head

Rsutherland Says:

Toi-toi…viel gluck….in bocca al luppa…xingyun…bonne chance…buena suerte… to both champions.
And may their fans emulate the heros for whom they are so passionate by behaving in a civilized manner.

NELTA Says:

I have to pick Nadal in this one. He is undefeated on clay to this point just like he was last year, but overall his wins have been more convincing this year. No doubt Roger will show flashes of brilliance, but I don’t think he will be consistently great tomorrow. I do hope it goes the distance.

As to the fans Rsutherland, they were extremely well behaved in last year’s final if my memory serves me correct. I don’t recall a single whistling episode. This year the fans have been a bit boorish by Spanish standards particularly on the secondary and tertiary show courts(austerity measures?). No doubt the final will have a paucity of plebeians(to borrow one of your favorite words) so I expect a well mannered crowd for the final.

Naresh Says:

Love em’ hate em’, you got to give it to them.. The Maestro’s of our Generation :)

rose Says:

Congratulations to Rafa and Roger for their wins today and i cant be more excited for the final tomorrow .we waited a whole year to see these two fantastic players play against each other..let the best player win!!!!

madmax Says:

Staff!

To put all those stats together in one place! AWESOME< when you look at the 5 setters, just incredible. Either way, strong, close matches.

Roger to go for the win tomorrow!

Win Roger!

C’moon!

How will Fed and Rafa sleep tonight?

sheila Says:

my heart wants federer to win, but my head, being in reality says rafa will take it. i hope i’m wrong because my fantasy is federer wins every match he plays w/nadal. unfortunately nadal is the best on clay(unbeatable) and federer hasn’t played w/consistency of late and we all know nadal will be top spinning to federers backhand the whole match. i will hope that roger pulls it out. i will be disappointed he doesn’t, but i will not be overly surprised that nadal takes it. i hope this doesnt take to many points from roger as i want him to break sampras’ #1 ranking record. 4 weeks he needs to surpass him.

dangerouspaul Says:

finally fed vs nadal…so heres the thing:

nadal will play like always and if feds serves near the 70% (first serves), keeps returning first serves like he did against gulbis and ferrer he has a shot winning this ( of course he has u may say..cuz he’s RF).nadal will be the human wall who runs down everyball and counterattacks when needed to; with federer having the upper hands on winners and unforced errors..he has to keep his UE % low like all week ..and convert his obligatory high breakpoint rate against nadal actually into breaks!!!
no matter how it ends tomorrow;expect both to meet each other again in RG..

KillerC Says:

GO RAFA!!! =] lets see da comeback! fo/wimby 10′ win em all!

contador Says:

c’mon. any of you holding out hope for federer, have you seen nadal? he has doubled in size since O2.

as i said, he is a sherman tank this year! fed has lots of artillery and he is improving but is missing the marks too much: backhands, forehands go long, wide, into net.

his first serve 81% in the first set today, combined with improved movement and mental focus was nearly vintage. but he can’t lose focus like he did in the second set and have a prayer.

it will be a stroke of luck if federer beats big nadal. geronimmmmoooooo, here we go!

hoping for a competitive match. no bagels and breadsticks.

would be great for rafa and the rafa fans to get their 18th master’s shield.

federer gets his 600 points; i am satisfied. defending his title? that would be a nice surprise, given his record against rafa on clay.

rafa has #2 back in time for FO.

madmax are you on an all-nighter? fed and rafa are sleeping but how will you?..heheehee…no sleep for you? maybe a nap, okay. : )
