Roger Federer landed in Brisbane yesterday and shortly thereafter the 17-time Grand Slam champion met the media at the airport. It’s been quite an off season for Federer with news of a new baby on the way, a new agency and a new coach.

Federer revealed no timetable or further details on Mirka’s pregnancy, but he did say he hopes she doesn’t have to sit through another epic match like the one he had with Andy Roddick at 2009 Wimbledon.

On the hiring of Stefan Edberg, Federer asked coach Severin Luthi if the team needed to be expanded following the departure of Paul Annacone. Roger liked Edberg, his childhood idol, but wasn’t sure if the Swede could find the time. Eventually he did!

Travelling just 10 weeks, Federer admits he doesn’t know what role Edberg will take right now, but he’ll be an inspiration regardless.

After a bye, the top-seeded Federer will face either Jarkko Nieminen or James Duckworth in the second round. Kei Nishikori is seeded second at the tournament. Roger is also in the doubles playing with Nicolas Mahut.

Here’s Roger arriving in Brisbane:

Roger talking about Mirka and the future:

Roger speaking about Edberg plus his thoughts on Novak Djokovic hiring Boris Becker, which he says is great for the game:

Federer has since practiced hinting the courts are playing fast.

madmax Says:

great videos shown!

…the 17-time grand slam champion said he was now ”energised” and ready to again challenge the best after enjoying a rare, untroubled off-season.

Advertisement ”I was able to do more than I thought, which is very encouraging,” he said.

‘I didn’t play any exhibitions which allowed me to train extremely hard and for a longer period of time. It’s the first time in a year that I could practise three, four weeks in a row without any setbacks, which has been the problem the last one-and-a-half years.

As goat owner, I can tell him what to do ANYTIME..coach or not.

skeezer Says:

^wishful thinking. You’re not going to tell him to turn those 11 losses you had against him into wins for you. If you want something from him, he was given a cow once, maybe you can have that. Just tell him.

Svetlana Says:

Hoorey! More volles without fear! That’s what absolutely needed!
Go New Old Fed!

queen, you are so funny! I mean it. A natural gift of sarcasm, humour, irony, all rolled into one. Many a true word spoken in jest. But here is a thought. Did you know that Navratilova was 46 years old and won a mixed doubles slam?

Incredible is what that is. So, you just never know. Perhaps Roger will play into his forties, but will you still be around then to come up with the quips? Hope so.

New racquet alert in last pic.

Maestro Fed Says:

Hope the new larger gear and the new coach bring great success to Roger in the new year.

Slice Tennis Says:

“I am happy to announce that beginning in Melbourne, Stefan Edberg will join Severin Lüthi on my coaching team.”
“Severin, who has been part of my team for the last 7 years, will do most of the weeks and Stefan has agreed to work with us.” Federer said on Facebook.

Whats with that claim that Federer has remained without a coach most of his career.

This is one of the classic examples exposing the usual false propaganda of the fed fans.

Slice tennis,

Fed has always been low key about Severin, and you, as a rafanatic, have known that to be the case. Sometimes less is more. He doesn’t have to expose the work anyone does in his team.

Probably Mirka is the head coach over all of them! But to have people around him that support and encourage and talk tactics is what is important, and to be fair,Severin had minor successes in his tennis career, mostly davis cup, do you really think he can teach Roger techniques? I doubt it, but certainly, he can offer his opinion, technique? Nah, Roger can handle that himself.

So I doubt whether Severin would call himself a head coach, but clearly out of respect, and if it is hierarchical, it would be:

Head Coach : Mirka
Head Coach Assistant and Friend: Severin
Coach Tactician for 10 weeks of the year: Edberg
Who’s the daddy?: Federer

A friend by his side is more important, and someone who he can trust. Obviously, that is what Severin’s role is.

And why so grumpy this morning? Really, that’s not like you. Especially when it comes to Roger?
