Novak Djokovic still hasn’t made a decision yet on his future with coach Boris Becker. Speaking Thursday in Shanghai following a 6-4, 6-3 win over Vasek Pospisil, Djokovic said there is no arrangement in place after 2016.

“We still haven’t talked about it.”

Djokovic added Becker just before the start of the 2013 season.

Under Becker, Djokovic has produced some of his best career tennis, winning half of his 12 Grand Slam titles including a first French Open earlier this year.

Becker is not with Djokovic in Shanghai this week. Djokovic will face qualifier Mischa Zverev in the quarterfinals on Friday.

RZ Says:

I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t continue to work with Becker (assuming Boris wants to continue). It’s been an extremely successful partnership.

Giles Says:

If they part that’s when joker will plummet.

Daniel Says:

Didn’t even know their partnership had an expring date. Is it a contract that ends in 2016?

This is not good considering some of Djoko’s latest statements. Seems like winning that RG took something out of him tennis wise. Or maybe he is just in a pre 30 crisis. It sure happended to me, but i was nowhere near his position and what he can achieve in tennis. A bit extra deama to follow up if this will just be a phase or signs of future to come.

Pretty odd, a few months ago he was sky high and suddenly his while future tennis is filled with qiestions.

Daniel:

When I saw all these articles on the “thanks but goodbye” re. Nole and Boris, I recall commenting that part of Nole’s issues earlier could be related to some parting of the ways with Becker rather than more family personal.

Like everyone else, one can only guess (or should not guess)- that it was parting of the minds between Boris and Nole. I also recall asking: “What more can Boris bring to Nole’s table?”

Maybe we’ll never know – maybe we have no right to know.

Khb Says:

That is too easy, Giles. Fedal needed no coach to disappear!
Hope that helps…😢

Novak is Novak. He’s gonna win 20+ Slams without Becker.
Becker’s jealous of him, just like the djoko brothers.
Maybe that’s why Novak is nervous.

Daniel Says:

Thanks J-Kath,

I never heard this news that Boris could stop coaching him earlier. Was genuine surprised.

chrisford1 Says:

Ah, a lot of this is people trying to telepathically discern what Djokovic’s “personal problem” was – and good luck with that. As Djokovic’s a complex guy with 8-9 things important to him he is trying to balance it’s harder to decipher what that problem is than with a Jimmy Connors. He kept it simple – tennis was to make money and get hot women. When he wasn’t playing well, simple, he was injured.
I believe both he and Boris have said as part of their deal that each would assess how the partnership was going periodically, and if it should go on or stop or work out some area of contention in downtime period. They said it in various interviews in 2014, even several times in 2015, 2016.

But for now, people can float all sorts of theories:

1. J-N fight over Foundation staffing with Ristic relatives, direction of the Foundation, helping Muslim refugee children vs Serbs, etc.
2. Fight over child rearing – time spent with the little guy, his diet, etc.
3. Fight over money, maybe of Mrs D wants to move into a bigger flat, get a mega-boat like Novak’s mom got from him, business investments.
4. She’s the one cheating, not him.
5. She and Boris.
6. Fight if there is disagreement on having more kids.
7. Deepika is a long ways away, but Novak has many gal pals in the WTA Tour. Maybe Jelena took it the wrong way when Novak said he was going out for some Danish Delight (he meant gluten-free coffee pastries, she thought “Caro!”)
8. Huge argument between Novak on one side and Jelena and Boris on the other about his vegan diet being too extreme and he has lost muscle mass and power in the process.
9. Some in-law rift.
10. He’s driving her crazy by practicing with his saxophone again.

Danica Says:

No problems with in-laws, that’s a guarantee.

Van Persie Says:

Novak needed a new mindset after the first 6 GS, he won another 6 with Boris. If he feels, that he has to change the strategy for the future, he should do that.

Van Persie Says:

J-K,

“Maybe we’ll never know – maybe we have no right to know.”

If Novak will no longer work with Boris, we would find out for sure, what happened there. Boris cannot keep secrets for himself, he loves himself to much. Or, hopefully, he does care very much about Nole, and he will make an exception.

Van Persie Says:

One more thing: Marian Vajda is the man, who is almost “indispensable” for Novak!

J-Kath Says:

VP

There could be a legal confidentiality agreement that kicks in when Boris leaves – whether it’s at the end of the year or the end of the next five years……?

J-Kath Says:

Chrisford 1

You missed out his singing/humming when he ought to be playing tennis….????

Van Persie Says:

Lol JK

By watching some highlights from Nole’s matches this week, have seen him smiling a lot. So he wants to be Zen, but also competitive. Reminds me on Privat Joker’s quote “Born to kill, but with peace in my heart”. Was something like that…

Danica Says:

Wow VP, that quote IS weird! :)

Van Persie Says:

^^ For JK: the quote was not correct, but that’s the idea

Van Persie Says:

Danica,

Privat Joker was a smart guy ;) You gotta watch the movie, if not yet done :)

Humble Rafa Says:

The Egg Lover should keep the red head Becker around. What if the Egg Lovers need a second child?

Paco Chuquiure Says:

Boris taught Nole how to win by playing meat and potatoes or as Brad Gilbert put it “winning ugly”. I surely believe Nole needs to go back to his vintage baseline game for a couple of years. Then he could re-adjust his game again. His backhand game has weakened since the arrival of Becker. That is a fact.
