jane Says:

congrats to stan! he’s been in fed’s shadow for a long while, but last year and this year, winning slams over rafa and novak, and being instrumental in the davis cup win, well he’s deserved the accolades. it’s nice to see him being recognized for his efforts/achievements.

RZ Says:

Congrats to Stan! Well deserved for him.

Giles Says:

Fed prolly said ” Oh kamman, give the award to Stan for a change”. 😳

Gypsy Gal Says:

Well done Stan, great to see the other Swiss getting some recognition too….

skeezer Says:

StanAnimal! Well deserved!

J-Kath Says:

Indeed. Congrats to Stan’s fans, Emily and to a lot of others – he is excellent.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Yeah and big congrats to Emily if your tuning in ;)….

Emily Says:

I’m here, saw this happen yesterday and was wondering if it would get a mention here. Really happy he’s getting the recognition he deserves

Tazman1 Says:

I don’t know why everyone is giving up on Rog! I will never give up on him and he is the best ever, as far as I’m concerned! It’s always the same when a Legend in a sport starts getting older the fans almost always find someone else! I am loyal to my sports idols and will always be that way! They are usually gracious and generous to different charities. So, what is not to love about them? Just because father or Mother Time takes his or her toll on an athlete, they shouldn’t be shunned and treated like they have lost their skills on purpose! I found that to be so ugly that I would punch that person in the nose! Anyway, so much for ranting FOR keeping our heroes as heroes! Thanks for reading!

Lodhi Says:

Fed just said on twitter: “It’s ok, it’s not like Stan won the Stefan Edberg sportsmanship award which by the way is the most coveted award of all time’.

I agree with Fed, and also, really liked skeezer’s big-heartedness who is a role-model for all tennis-x commenters.

Wog Boy Says:

I went to check how many times Roger won this award, and it proved what my friend who lives in Switzerland told me, and it is that Roger is not as popular in Switzerland as he is around the world. He won it six times in the last 13 years, and how many Edberg award he won?

In 2009 he was reporters favorite but not plebiscite favorite, same as in 2005 when he he actually wasn’t happy for not winning it:

“2009 Roger Federer was in front by miles after counting the media’s choice. But the spectators voted for Didier Cuche, making him winning the title. Even Cuche was surprised and in his speech he apologized to Federer, mentioning «I hope he’s not too angry…» Federer didn’t really bother, but he did the first time this happened. In 2005 spectators voted for Thomas Lüthi, after media boosted Federer on top place.”

Wog Boy Says:

^^ forgot to say, he won it six times, and how many Edberg awards he has?:)

Wog Boy Says:

^^disregard last post, I already said it in previous one.

Okiegal Says:

@Wog Boy….Almost everyone disregards what you say……you don’t have to tell us…..

Wog Boy Says:

Okie,
Fine, I can live with that..

jane Says:

wog boy did you see the tennis channel link on the other thread? it’s worth a read.

Okiegal Says:

Wog, fantastic!!

Wog Boy Says:

jane, thanks for pointing that one out. I was busy trolling the threads so I missed that link. I love Steve Flink and I fully agree with him about Nole’s 2015 and this final sentence:

“In my view, he can take his game to an even higher level in 2016.”

That is scary thought for Nole’s oponents.

jane Says:

no problemo, wog boy! steve flink sits “outside” typical tennis reporting i find. he marches to his own drum. he gives lengthy analyses of matches, which can almost be like reliving them they’re so detailed, and uses words with gusto. :) i like reading him too.

(btw, for the record, i don’t disregard what you say!)

Okiegal Says:

Jane, no one would expect you to! Fans of a feather flock together and rightfully so. You two are thick as thieves, doting on each other’s posts. It’s nice to have a good buddy on the forum….I’m just jealous!!! LOL Not really, just kidding!!

jane Says:

okie, you have more sayings than a goose has feathers! ;)

J-Kath Says:

Saw a brief interview with Federer (on UK Late Sports round-up) – he was totally unlike himself – no smile, restrained, very subdued. He stated he was hoping to help bring Olympic glory to Switzerland by playing the mixed doubles and men’s doubles…it was for his country he emphasised ….not a word about singles aspiration….at least not in the clip I saw…..not a happy bunny at the moment….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Tasman1 nobodys giving up on Federer that would be the day,all people are saying is its nice for a change to see another player getting some recognition, its a tennis forum after all,not a Federer,Nadal,Djokovic fan club, some people are actually fans of other players too believe it or not?….

Gypsy Gal Says:

Okie fan groups do indeed stick together, nothing wrong in it either,it just seems sometimes when they dont say anything when a fellow fan bullies a rival fan,it seems like they are actually condoning it….

Giles Says:

Okie. I like your style girl. Preach it.
11 18 pm – Pure gold. Lol

mat4 Says:

@GG:

It’s not the complete truth. You have to defend yourself first, and sometimes, you are too… nice to do it.

Then, while I read your posts, or the post of my fellow nolefans, I don’t read Brando’s, or CDP’s, or Giles’. I don’t always know what’s happening, and I believe that’s the case with many of us.

But I intervened a few times, and supported you when I was aware of what was happening. Even though you dislike Novak so much…

BTW, I enjoyed this “passe d’armes” between jane and Okie.

mat4 Says:

Then, I don’t think with stick together based on fandom, but based on habits. I don’t argue with you, GG, nor with Skeezer, although you are fans of different players.

But I also don’t read posts by new nolefans that I don’t know.

And if you meant here Travis Bickle — while he was a bit offensive at the beginning, he changed, and he writes with a lot of wit and humour. But there are no attacks ad hominem in his posts.

Wog Boy Says:

Yes mat4, and instead of supporting me, you are going after me and trying to ruin my hardly earned reputation and credibility on TX, Roger fans would never do that to each other, but I am good man and I’ll forgive you..
BTW, I was away most of the last six weeks, I have more time now to answer my emails.

Gypsy Gal Says:

Mat4 fair enough,i dont really seek to get into personal quarrels with any posters, but you cant help it sometimes, anyway about that guy i will agree to disagree there,as the guy still makes smutty remarks about all players not named Novak,ie sexuality because certain players are not married, having relations with other fellow players, fake marriage, and putting a smilie on the end of his posts, and is still very sarcastic towards me, and Skeezer also likes Novak too so its unlikely you two would disagree, anyway i might not like Novak but i have actually talked up for him on a number of occasions, that goes unoticed, say anything slightly negative and its pitchforks at dawn….

Wog Boy Says:

GG,

Stick with me, I wouldn’t trust those Frenchies..

Gypsy Gal Says:

Wogboy and Mat4 i enjoy the back and fourth from you guys…..

mat4 Says:

WB:

Of course nobody noticed when GG defended Novak… the same way nobody notices when I talk up for Rafa… because I don’t ;-)

Alison: just joking, just joking…

Btw, I am just reading a book of Jean Haudry about the Indoeuropeans, and how they considered women as useful only for the rest of the warrior. It’s ethnology and language, of course, nothing more… :-)

calmdownplease Says:

I doubt ANYBODY really notices you whatever you do, bar a few Novak fans.

`I don’t read Brando’s, or CDP’s, or Giles’. I don’t always know what’s happening, and I believe that’s the case with many of us..`

Oh YES!
‘us’ don’t take any notice of those posts because ‘US’ are too interested in what Mat4 has to say, so he can therefore speak for us
N.O.T
HAHAHAHA & HA!

mat4 Says:

So you still READ my posts?

Giles Says:

mat4. You’re such a w****r!

Okiegal Says:

@Jane…….LOL I have more in my arsenal…..just can’t remember what they are…..

Ben Pronin Says:

Is that why you use caps, CDP, because you want people to notice you?

Okiegal Says:

Here again my simple little comment about fans sticking together got another discussion started. How do I manage to do this??

@Mat4 ……If you ever said anything remotely nice about Rafa I would cut my shoe laces and go straight up! I do admire your honesty about your hate for him….you shoot from the hip and I like that in a person. You mentioned that some people are too nice to say what they want to….Well I’m that person!! I have typed lots of comments and after reading the finished comment I will erase it because I got a little nasty. Didn’t like how it sounded and what type of person one might perceive me to be. Novak isn’t my favorite, nor is Federer but I have sang their praises a lot on this forum. I believe that might tick some of my fellow Rafa fans off but so be it. I will admit I have posted some tacky things before…..I wanted to bring that point up before someone else did….trying to cover all of my basis!!

RZ Says:

On a semi-related note, Marcelo Melo was named GQ Brasil’s Man of the Year for Sports. http://www.atpworldtour.com/en/news/melo-gq-man-of-the-year

jane Says:

hi mat4: let’s stick together okay? hee hee.

but seriously, it’s not like a bunch of non-novak fans are jumping in to support him every time giles makes a slur.

mat4 Says:

@jane:

giles… who’s giles?

Giles Says:

Giles is a joker hater mat4.

mat4 Says:

@Okie:

So, you’re not a nolefan? I got the wrong impression, since you always stick with us…

BTW, don’t bother about nasty posts. The trick is to write a smiley at the end of the sentence.

Some nasty posts are even very appreciated. Let’s see… nasty posts about Rafa? :-)

Gypsy Gal Says:

Jane as i say i have spoke up for Novak on a number of occasions and Roger, ive even been called a fake Rafa fan,and a secret fan of both at times, and attacked by fellow Rafa fans because i dont believe hes a saint either, like i said to Mat 4 the nice stuff and the congrats seem to go unoticed….

Okiegal Says:

@Mat4….Not a Novak fan per say……but do appreciate his prowess on the tennis court. He is a grand champion atm, Fed was a great champion in his time at number one and so was Rafa during his #1 stint. As tennis fans we have been so fortunate to have been a part of this era of tennis. We’ve been privy to watch some amazing players. What can we expect next?? I will venture to say we wont see anything like this era ever again. 17 slams, 14 slams, 9 slams and Novak isn’t finished yet. If Rafa gets back on target maybe he has another slam in him and Roger too. 2016 should be an interesting year and I can’t wait. Will this post pass muster??? LOL :)

Purcell Says:

Very pleased for Stan,a player who has you on the edge of your seat in expectation of his wonderful arsenal of shots, particularly the backhand of course. He’s grown in stature and in confidence both on and off the court and in the suit wearing stakes he can certainly equal his Swiss compatriot, you know, the one who has ‘overshadowed’ him for years, the one who moaned about not being chosen in 2009, the one who is not as popular in little old Switzerland as he is round the world. Erm, Murray is not as popular in little old UK as he is round the world, Nadal is not as popular in little old Mallorca as he is round the world. Djokovic? Not popular……..? No, that’s unfair. Popular in Serbia but not round the world.
Hope Stan consolidates his position as a force to be reckoned with in 2016 and firms up a more regular on-court attitude. Those are my wishes but I can’t predict what will happen or read minds. As reference to Stan seems to involve Rog quite frequently, I’ll just add that to my mind, the latter’s star appears to be descending. I’m pretty realistic about this as are many of his fans, in the way that fans of the venerable players of the past have also been. It’s the non-fans who are not letting go. They see this downward trend as the most golden opportunity yet to activate more frantic searches for the skeleton in the cupboard. Tiresome really.

Okiegal Says:

@Giles……Pure gold, that’s me! I’m one of the golden oldies on here……I was a big fan of Borg back in the day…..way back in the day!! Another “dirter”……love that court color!! No blue or green clay for me!! The only thing golden about the golden years is my urine!!! :)

Okiegal Says:

@Purcell

How do you know that all of these little old players aren’t popular in their little old countries, save one???? You don’t think Rafa isn’t popular in his little old island and Fed isn’t popular in Switzerland?? Lucy, you got some splainin’ to do!!

elina Says:

okie it’s “you hasson’ splainin’ to do.”

Even Murray knows that.

Where’s Colin when you need him?

mat4 Says:

BTW, Okie, Spain is not an island…

mat4 Says:

Sorry, I just noticed it wasn’t about Spain, but about Mallorca…

Okiegal Says:

@Mat4……Thanks for acknowledging the error of your ways… you righted the wrong……nice of you. I was just getting ready to splain’ it to you….. :)

Purcell Says:

Okiegal: I’m using obvious and high-profile examples here. I explained some time ago that when I was in Mallorca last year, we were always alert for signs of Rafa as you would be if you’re a tennis fan, but only saw was a t-shirt with a large RF and an RF hat. If you’re aware of the U.K. press you’ll know that Andy has had more vitriol aimed in his direction than many other Brit sportspeople and I have a hard time convincing my friends that he’s a great guy and worth our support.
For a variety of reasons, playing style, on and off court demeanour, looks (for heaven’s sake) etc etc, I’m saying that it’s unrealistic to expect countrymen/women to always support/admire their stars and this is precisely what good old Wogboy has conveniently forgotten, in his desperation to decry Fed at every opportunity. As I and others have said many times before, support who you like, wherever they are from, for whatever reasons but don’t lay it on other players and supporters.
Okiegal, as you and GG are proud and true fans of your favourite, you should understand what I’my getting at.

Purcell Says:

Sorry, two typos: unnecessary ‘was’ Line 3. Last line ‘y’ after ‘I’m’.

calmdownplease Says:

`Is that why you use caps, CDP, because you want people to notice you?’

Oh my!
I’ve been deconstructed by an intellectual colossus!!!
No BP, it’s meant for dramatic effect at key moments, there’s very little way to use writing effects on this site.
Not even emphasis.

Okiegal Says:

@Purcell…..Thanks for the feedback. I guess I find it hard to believe that his stuff (Rafa’s) is not in every little shop on the corner. But, after you stated that fact, it brought to mind of a guy from my hometown who has made it big in the country western music world. His name is Blake Shelton, he does The Voice show. In fact, he grew up about three houses down from me. His stuff isn’t everywhere in our town either, except for his CDs that can be found at Wal-Mart. We have a part of main street that bears his name. He can come to Ada and no one pays much attention to him because he’s just good old Blake. So you have made a good point which I do understand. I remember when Andy got so much publicity for not winning Wimby and then bingo, he did win at Wimby 2 times and I was so glad because the press over there were just downright tacky. It’s all good Purcell. I appreciate you getting back to me. Have a good day!

Purcell, for the record, I ran right through your typos! Not to worry….the TXers are brilliant when it comes to reading between the lines…even though I do miss Colin…..and his straightening everyone out……..we seem to manage figuring out what each one is trying to say…..OKie

Gypsy Gal Says:

Purcell i know weve had our differences, but i will say although Nadals my favorite i have alot of admiration for Roger and Novak and everything they have achieved in the game, and i will never trash their achievements either, and dont hate either player, theres only a couple that i dont care for for reasons i wont go in to,but im just not one that goes and makes a fuss over all stuff humanitarian whether it be Roger,Rafa,Novak or whomever, which seems to be the only thing weve ever really had a disagreement about, anyway peace and SEASONS GREETINGS….

jane Says:

purcell, i agree stan wears a suit well. heck, he even pulled off those plaid shorts with a certain amount of panache!

Heather-Flower Says:

Well done, Stan the Man!….I saw him twice this year live at Queen’s Club and Wimbledon…..and although he is a bit erratic at times with his shot making, the French was an awesome, true triumph!….it’s always nice to see the guys in the next level coming through….while it makes the big guys stop and think, which is always a good thing!….Happy Christmas , Stan, an early well -deserved present…..:) H x
