A “furious” Serena Williams smashed her racquet, then “chucked” it away after double faulting down matchpoint during doubles yesterday in the Beijing.

Serena and Venus were down 9-10 to Chan/Huber in the supertiebreaker when the incident took place. While the sisters may be out of the doubles, they are both still alive in singles.

In second round play today the World No. 1 Serena faces Francesca Schiavone. Venus meets Sabine Lisicki.

Since her US Open title, her 17th career Slam win, Serena’s name has been brought up the women’s GOAT discussion, and yesterday the 32-year-old was told that Steffi Graf thinks she can break Court’s record of 24.

“I’ve never heard Steffi make a comment really, so that is extremely moving and shocking and exciting,” Serena said. “She was someone I looked up to tremendously. However, I do think there is a lot of competition out there. I think there are so many young girls that have the desire to dethrone me and be No. 1 and win Grand Slams as well. So I still take it one day at a time. I can only do my best. Believe me, I will try.”
