During a thrilling third set tiebreak loss yesterday, French showman Gael Monfils was up to his usual tricks: sliding, jumping, running without the racquet and entertaining.

And above all, Monfils very nearly pulled off the victory over the World No. 1 but couldn’t hold a 3-1 break lead in the final set before losing to Djokovic 62, 67(4), 76(2).

Afterward, Djokovic admitted he loves watching Monfils play.

“Gael is Gael,” Djokovic said. “That’s what he does. He loves jumping around, sliding, he’s very unpredictable. You don’t know what his next move is, so that’s why he’s so interesting. I said before that he’s probably the only guy in the world, tennis player, that I would pay a ticket to watch the match. He’s really fun to watch but not so much fun to play against.”

And here’s why:

Said Monfils of the match, “I think I showed good stuff today. You know, I think I was happy. I hope, you know, we keep this level. And then, you know, just motivate me to work harder. Next time I will try to maybe be a bit further and maybe beat him.”

Hippy Chic Says:

Gael is a very talented watchable player, but lacks the killer instinct of a champion….

Michael Says:

Gael is always energetic on court, mobilising the crowd to cheer in his favour and takes the fight to his opponent. He is a player who has all the weapons in his armoury and yet is struggling to stay afloat and that gives you an idea of the kind of Competition Tennis is possessed with.
