Rafael Nadal spoke to the Spanish press today in Manacor, re-iterating that he will see his doctor Tuesday in Barcelona about his injured right wrist.

Nadal, who admitted he doesn’t know how the recovery is progressing, says after consulting with the doctor he’ll make a final decision this weekend on his US Open title defense after a few days of full practice with the wrist.

If it’s still not healed that decision could even come tomorrow.

Rafa, who hasn’t played competitively since Wimbledon, worries that the wrist setback and lack of matches won’t help his result in New York, but he desperately wants to play.

The US Open begins in two weeks.

Giles Says:

Here’s hoping for the best.
Vamos Champ!

jane Says:

we know this already. there are a video on the exact same topic posted a couple of days ago. we also know, based on toni’s comments, that they fully intend to be there. why else would he wish that nole arrive in bad form?

jane Says:

i should say “there is:”

Giles Says:

They are 2 different articles. Read them!

Okiegal Says:

@Jane

Maybe Rafa and Uncle T didn’t get slammed hard enough on the other thread, so they’re giving it another shot!! Lol

jane Says:

^ lol, or maybe it’s just because there’s a new video.

Giles Says:

The first article is headed ” Rafael Nadal will decide Tuesday on the US Open”. This article is headed “Rafael Nadal will see the doctor Tuesday, then decide at end of week on US Open”.
As I said, different articles. Even if Rafa’s wrist has healed and the doctor gives him the go-ahead to play he needs to test the wrist hitting two handed BH’s without pain. If this doesn’t work out he will not play.

Hippy Chic Says:

Theres no guarantee as yet that he will even play the USO,and put it this way im not holding my breath,so this is all besides the point….

Okiegal Says:

It is beside the point, Chic. I think Giles is on target, if the two handed back hand can’t be hit w/o pain, I don’t think he will play either and I don’t want him to. If not completely healed and still playing it will be a DelPo scenario. He doesn’t need that. Something was detached, my nurse friend says this can be more major than minor. Hope it’s on the mend…..we will see! If not, I say we will see him at Aussie Open and not before. The power used for striking the ball, I just can’t see a detached ligament or whatever it was being completely healed in such a short amount of time…..but we can hope.

Michael Says:

Not a happy situation for Rafa and his legion of fans. But one hopes that he ends this suspense soon about his participation at the US Open. If the wrist injury is serious, it would be better for Rafa not to play and risk his career. What he would need is rest and then become battle ready.

Okiegal Says:

@Michael

You are so right……I personally don’t see how he could even consider playing this soon….jmo.

Michael Says:

Okiegal,

Ofcourse it would be really a suicide if he tries to play considering that his wrist injury is quite serious than earlier thought. There is no other option for Rafa but to blame the cruel fate and move on. It is a real pity that a Champion of Rafa’s calibre has to sit out so many tournaments and that would be the worst moments for a Sportsman. But, Rafa is not only fighting his opponents, he is fighting his own body which is not cooperating with his adventurism. The Warrior that he is, he is still battling on despite his bodily constraints. Let us hope Rafa atleast is fully fit for the Shanghai tournament.

Okiegal Says:

If he is not able to play USO, I hope he bows out until the AO…..as bad as I hate to say it…..My mind still wanders back to DelPo and the horrible times he has gone through with his wrist injury. I think he would take off a little while…..but not long enough to completely heal. He has been off quite awhile now. I’m anxious to see how he fares now after his surgery. It will be good to have the gentle giant back, I like him.

Michael Says:

Del Potro – Still nobody is sure when he will be back. There was a rumour that he would participate in this year’s US Open, but still nothing is yet to be confirmed ? What a pity !? Such a fine player who had one of the most lethal bludgeoning forehand modern Tennis has seen, is now treading uncertain times not knowing when he would play ? And the absence of Del Potro has certainly orphaned the Tennis World.

Okiegal Says:

Michael, he does possess a lethal forehand. I guess the hard hitting has caused his wrist problem. He can definitely knock the cover off the ball…..it’s obvious why he had the problem to begin with. Ready for him to be back….
