Serena Williams Explains Her “Splits”
During 64, 64 win over Ana Ivanovic in the opening day of the WTA Finals, Serena Williams did one of her trademark splits.
The World No. 1 is one of the more muscular players on the women’s tour, so it’s quite extraordinary she has that kind of flexibility. And after the win, she spoke about it.
“I don’t try to do it,” Serena said of her splits. ‘I never do it in practice. I never run that hard in practice. I save it for a match. I do work on my flexibility, but not for tennis. Because I dance. It’s not necessarily for that. I guess it comes in handy. Like knock two birds out with one stone.”
A 4-time tournament champion, Serena has now won 16 straight matches at the WTA Finals!
“Oh, boy, not another streak,” Serena said. “So now I’m 16 and, Gosh, here we go again. We’ll see how it goes.”
Serena, who could lose her No. 1 ranking this week to Maria Sharapova, will now play Simona Halep in her next match.
