Serena Williams Got Bageled For Just The Seventh Time In Her Career [Chart]
Earlier today the WTA Finals in Singapore saw its first big upset as Simona Halep not only ended Serena Williams’s 16-match win streak at the event, but also dominated the World No. 1 beating her in resounding fashion 60, 62.
The 60 bagel Serena ate was just the 7th of a career that began 19 years ago in 1995! That’s seven bagel sets in 801 career matches!
Here’s a list of all the players to have won a 60 set off Serena Williams:
YEAR | EVENT | OPPONENT | SCORE | W/L |
---|---|---|---|---|
2014 | WTA Finals | Simona Halep | 06 26 | L |
2013 | Madrid | A. Medina Garrigues | 63 06 75 | W |
2008 | WTA Finals | Venus Wiliams | 75 16 06 | L |
2007 | Zurich | Patty Schnyder | 06 03 ret | L |
2007 | Miami | Justin Henin | 06 75 63 | W |
2005 | Dubai | Jelena Jankovic | 06 34 ret | L |
1999 | French Open | MJ Fernandez | 36 61 06 | L |
After the match, Halep, who is making her WTA Finals debut, called the result one of the best of her career. “It’s the biggest match in my life, so I can’t put into words how I feel right now. I feel very happy! I just want to enjoy it,” Halep said. “It was always my dream to beat one of the Williams sisters, but of course without the help of the crowd I wouldn’t have been able to play this way today.”
The loss also equals the fewest games Serena’s ever lost in a completed match (she’s twice lost 61 61 before). The 4-time champion will now have to beat Genie Bouchard on Friday to have a chance at qualifying for the semifinals.
“It’s odd. I feel like once you lose you should be out of event, you know, that’s what we’re used to,” Williams said. “But I’m still hanging in there, so we’ll see what happens.
“I played the tournament when it was an elimination. This format is fun because you can lose and keep winning. But I’m in a situation where I’m going to have to win my matches because I didn’t win many games today at all.”
