Tommy Robredo probably doesn’t want to see Andy Murray anytime soon. And who can blame him? After blowing five matchpoints in a loss to Murray a month ago in the Shenzhen final, Robredo had revenge on his mind today in the Valencia, Spain final.

But would you believe Robredo once again blew five matchpoints this time losing to Murray in a final set tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(8).

The match, one of the best ATP finals of 2014, went 3-hours, 20-minutes with Murray taking home his third ATP title in his last five events and virtually securing a spot in London.

But Robredo’s perfect reaction may be what’s most remembered from this incredible final. And that’s 10 blown matchpoints in his last two matches against Murray, both in finals!

Hippy Chick Says:

I like Robredo, and it did look funny,but i dont think i would be encouraging yougsters to follow him as a role model….

Margot Says:

Andy Murray: you beauty!

jane Says:

but it was a friendly one. :)

congrats to andy!!! well fought by the looks of it, though i didn’t see the match.

is andy’s ranking up to 4 yet?

Hippy Chick Says:

Jane i believe he moves up to 5 when the rankings come out tomorrow….

Hippy Chick Says:

IMO Andy will be too exhausted to make much of an impression at the WTFs,but at least his seeding will be high for the AO,and hes ending the year on a high note….

jane Says:

on the one hand, he could be tired. but on the other hand, momentum and confidence go a long way hippy, as does being in a match-play groove. we’ll soon see.

thanks for the update on andy’s ranking. seems like he should be 4 already!!

Polo Says:

They should postpone the WTF a few more months and keep Murray fighting to qualify. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so determined and unwavering since he professed his goal to make it to the WTF.

calmdownplease Says:

Murray deserved a double bird imo
I certainly aimed at few of them at the screen when he was on
And I’m a fan!
Phew
Pass me the smelling salts!
And a triple G&T if there’s any left!

Polo Says:

By the way, that was the friendliest, funniest double bird I’ve ever seen. The way Robredo did it was the best way a loser can compliment his vanquisher after a long hard fought match (especially after also losing in a simila fashion before). Genius!

jane Says:

^ yeah i thought it was pretty cute and honest.

Hippy Chick Says:

Robredo is cute,hadnt noticed how cute till now ;)

Brando GOAT poster Says:

LMFAO Tommy that was awesome! More natural, true to instinct behaviour from players is always welcome! Well done Tommy for looking Muzza in the eye and dropping the salute and kudos to Muzza for digging it and understanding the vibe, good stuff all round!

RZ Says:

I was about to be outraged but then saw Robredo did it in a joking manner.

Great win by Andy! Up to #5 in the Race to London. Phenomenal.

This has been a great tennis weekend for me. My two favorite ATP players won tournaments, plus I won’t my USTA league match yesterday, as did my ladies team. Yay!

Hippy Chick Says:

Congrats RZ,a great day for you….

Margot Says:

Congrats RZ very pleased for you…oh and Andy too, of course! Take it you didn’t actually see Andy’s match…;)

RZ Says:

Thanks Hippy Chick and Margot! And no, I was out and about and didn’t see the match. :-)

BTW, if you look up photos of Robredo, you’ll see that he’s not only quite good looking, but very photogenic.

TennisVagabond.com Says:

Awesome. Beauty of sport right there.

Okiegal Says:

@Margot…..

Congrats to you and Andy!! Glad he won, he needed a boost and btw this is the funniest video I’ve ever seen!! All in good fun. I didn’t get to see the match, but they both looked spent! Onward and upward Andrew!!

Michael Says:

Robredo is always a tough customer for Andy and whenever these two play each other, you can expect a cliff hanger of a contest.It is good to note that Andy prevailed in the end to win Valencia and cement his qualification to the World Tour finals which is made still easier by the withdrawal of Rafa.

Margot Says:

@Michael
Was amazed at the quality of play from both players considering how knackered they were.
@OK
Cheers doll, still grinning :)

Okiegal Says:

Margot…..back at cha’ girl! Tennis is going good for you Andy fans, hope it continues….mine is sucky!! Lol

Hippy Chick Says:

RZ yeah very photogenic and very good looking,better than Haas?well IMO anyway lol,but without sounding too shallow,hes a darn good player,anyone who plays Murray that close,has got my seal of approval ;))..

Hippy Chick Says:

Okiegal it wasnt all bad,RG for the nineth time,a GS for the 10th straight year,4 titles,and RU at the AO,so glass half full rather than half empty….

Marcin Says:

Of course it was a bad gesture but we all know what was behind it – nothing negative. Tommy in “own” way wanted to show Murray that the game was good. I prefer Robredo’s finger in this style to Fognini

MMT Says:

Please note that a month ago Murray beat Robredo in 3 sets in China after Robredo held something like 5 match points in the second set and they fizzled out physically (cramp, etc.) to lose the 3rd by a bread stick, so I think it was in that context that he gave him the double-bird.

But it it was a fantastic match, and Murray really earned it the old fashioned way.

Honfleuraise Says:

Margot
I really envy the spectators who got to see that match โ€“ the lucky so and sos although I don’t know if my nerves would have stood up to the 200 minutes of high voltage tension. I was like a wrung out dishcloth by the end. I can’t understand how anybody could possibly have misinterpreted Tommy’s gesture at the net. It was quite the funniest end of match exchange and a lovely display of good sportsmanship. Will you be at the WTF this year?

Okiegal Says:

@Chick 7:19

You’re right, I shouldn’t be all that down hearted about his year…..the number 9 was OTT for sure and being a finalist at Aussie Open was special…..then all hell broke loose…back…wrist…appendicitis..
crazy year to say the least, but that’s the sport, no? LOL. I wish him the best to be back on the court asap after his surgery to see how it all plays out for 2015. I fear our guy’s body is breaking down. It pains me to even think that, much less say
it, but I’m being realistic..VAMOS!!

andrea Says:

i love it! who hasn’t felt that way after a close match? glad they could both find humour in that.

Okiegal Says:

I didn’t get to watch Andy/Tommy match, but I’m going to try to watch a replay. Reading everyone’s remarks about it….must have been a real “cracker”.
Tommy’s gesture at the end was a hoot and Andy’s reply was so neat…loved it!! So happy for him and his doting fans. Hope he does well at the year end tournaments….because he’s had his probs this year too!! C’mon Andy!!

Margot Says:

@MMT
Thanks, I always appreciate your input.
@Honfleuraise
Stress, what stress? All was fine at the bottom of the garden from where I watched..;) I thought it was a grand display of mutual respect at the net and loved Andy giving Tommy a hug. Gr8 trophy acceptance speech too. Did you hear it? He mentioned Amelie.
Yes, I’ll be at O2 so fingers crossed and fingers crossed for Rafa too that all goes well for him.
Big hugs gal.

Hippy Chick Says:

Margot nice words there about Rafa thanks for that,all is not lost as i love Andy too,so i will always pull for Andy,you can be sure of that….

RZ Says:

@Hippy Chick – more photogenic than Haas but not better looking. :-)
