With A New Racquet, Rafael Nadal Began His Clay Campaign By Playing What He Called His Best Match Of The Year

After a tough start to the season, maybe Rafael Nadal really is finding his footing on his favorite red clay. Nadal, who has just won title since the French Open, began this European clay season with a crushing 62, 61 win over Lucas Pouille, calling the win one his of best performances of the year.

“Today, I played solidly,” said Nadal. “Today, I played with no mistakes in a row. I played aggressively when I had to play aggressive. I hit some good passing shots than [in] the past couple of months. [It is] a thing that I haven’t been doing very well.

“I will go back to the hotel with [a] fantastic feeling, because I played probably the best match of the year for me… I played with the right mentality [and] the right concentration.”

Is this exactly the match and the message (to his rivals) Nadal needed?

Nadal is also playing with a new colored, black-out racquet this week. Is he testing a new frame, as and he and Babolat suggest, or is it just an old racquet painted for marketing purposes?

“With this new racket, I have less control,” Nadal said of the racquet. “Not today. In theory I have less control. In theory I have more power and more spin.”

Nadal, an 8-time Monte Carlo champion, will face the big serving force John Isner in the third round tomorrow. The American took Rafa to 5 sets at the French Open in 2011.

“He is a very dangerous player on any surface, because his serve works well on clay, hard, indoor, everywhere.”

sienna Says:

how to spin this?

is he claiming to be favorite after this match.
he is reading my comments and is tryingto act accordingly.

Ben Pronin Says:

I’m not the favorite for anything.
I played the best match of the year.
I’m nervous.
I have no control.
Today I have control.

jane Says:

lol, ben.

Giles Says:

Krishna Says:

Okiegal Says:

Lol, Ben…..

You should be feeling dominate today, 3 LOLs!! Good job!!

skeezer Says:

ROFL BEN!

Okiegal Says:

@Ben…..one more!!

SG1 Says:

LOL. Ben’s right. There may be a point where Rafa should errr…stop talking. Just play.

I mean, where’s the sense in playing with a racket that has less control. More control, more power. That’s the ticket.

sienna Says:

just realising Rafael plays a super bluf. Djoker will have to call and is all in

Sirius Says:

May be he wanted to mean that he hasn’t got total control of the new stick as he’s still adjusting to it? Thus he’s saying he has less control over it at the moment (compared to the previous one) but this stick is capable of producing more power/spin (than the previous one)

Ben Pronin Says:

Theoretically. You always sacrifice one for the other. Either you have more control and less power or less control and more power. It’s just, I don’t know why Nadal bothers saying it. I know we clamor for transparency but this is wildly irrelevant.

RZ Says:

“Today, I played with no mistakes in a row.”

I would love to be able to say that one day.

chris ford1 Says:

Part of it is honest humility in Rafa, but it is sort of amped up by he and Uncle Toni into ridiculously lowered expectations.
To take pressure off him, and to sort of cast his comebacks and wins as miraculous and against all odds.
He’s done this all his career.
“Roger is the greatest and I am just a young Spaniard without his genius and talent. He is the best ever.”
“Yes, I have been lucky enough to beat the GOAT most times we play, not just on clay, but that is of course not typical. Even this Wimbledon which I have won by a miracle against him..I never thought it could happen (despite taking Roger to the edge in 2007 at Wimbledon)”.
“It should not happen. How I have come back this year 2010 from knees that could keep me out of the game forever (yet not losing a shred of speed or agility) – is unexplainable.”
“Of course I am not the best clay player. There are many better than me. Roger is really the favorite in each match on clay. He beat me last year in Madrid, you know.”
2011 – “I am still very troubled by my knees. Novak must always be thought of as the favorite, I am lucky given what shape I am in just to be on the same court as him, and better players like Andy and Roger and Tsonga and Berdych.”
“I changed tactics and made it closer in 2012, but I struggle each day against players with more talent and who are in better health.”
“How I have come back so far in my 2013 comeback is a miracle. Yes I may have not lost what you see as speed and agility, but each day, I do not know if my back or knees will stop me. They hurt. A lot.
“There are so many good players coming up. Between them and Roger, Nole, Andy and many great veterans like Verdasco and Tomas and Ferru, I am extremely , unbelievably lucky if I win anything”.
“As poor a player as I am these days, 2014 was a disaster!”
“Of course Novak is the favorite on clay now. I am very nervous, I cannot hit or control the ball. Should I somehow make it past this 88th ranked player, I will be fortunate..but then better players besides Novak also await, and could certainly defeat me. Roger and Andy are playing unbelievable, no? Should I win, I will need unbelievable effort and ability to play far above my usual tennis these days”

And So Goes The Life Of Poker Player Nadal..

Humble Rafa Says:

Why do you jokers make fun of me.

You just like:

I am the best since slice bread.
Ofcourse, I am the greatest.
Having 2 twins makes be goater than the greatest
I didn’t lose, it was a win.

Who are you afraid of? Mrs Arrogance?

tennismonger Says:

@ sienna –

You just may have inadvertently revealed the name of Rafa’s new test stick –

The Babolat Buper Bluf!

tennismonger Says:

Did I really type that?

“Super Bluf”

pogi Says:

Mr. Nadal’s english is bad looking today… LOL

Okiegal Says:

@pogi……How is your Spanish today?? :)

Matador Says:

La Décima is ALL the MATTERS!

He will surpass Navratilova and will be the first in open era, male or female to win a same major 10 times.

Abuya Says:

good luck elmatador!!

Ben…you nailed it! Irrelevant is the perfect word for it. When Fed made his racket change, he only made positive comments regarding it (if any at all).

Giles Says:

And so goes chris ford’s weak attempt at trying to belittle Nadal, That was a pretty poor post I must say! Trying to hold everyone’s attention? FAIL!!
