Watch A WTA Player Serve Underhanded On Match Point At The French Open [Video]
A la Michael Chang, Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano tried an underhand serve at match point during a tough win yesterday over Veronica Cepede Royg in the Roland Garros first round. Razzano was dealing with an ab injury in the match, but threw in an underhanded serve to keep her opponent off balance on a second serve matchpoint at 5-2, 40-30 in the third set! What a time to do it. And she missed it but moments later closed the match 26, 64, 62.
“I have sometime no choice,” Razzano explained. “I would like to surprise my adversary, and sometimes when I feeling it’s a good time to do that, I prefer to do that. It’s not easy for me because I prefer to serve normal, normal serve, but sometimes, you know, you can run after your serve and you can have a good defense and good attack. Why? Because I like to surprise my adversary today sometimes.”
The moved raised the question of sportsmanship, but Caroline Wozniacki welcomes those kinds of serves.
“If someone wants to serve underarm with me, go ahead,” Wozniacki said. “I’m ready. I go in and attack. I think that’s why nobody serves underhand really. Obviously when you serve from up, it’s a much harder ball to return.”
A few years ago Razzano stunned Serena Williams in the first round. Now she tried one of craziest serves you will see.
