Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Milos Raonic On Court Today In Montreal
After successful doubles debuts Monday, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray open play today in Montreal. Yesterday, the two along with Rafael Nadal, all won their doubles first round matches. And Murray will now play his brother Jamie in the second round of the competition.
“I’ve never played my brother since we became professionals,” said Andy who partnered with Leander Paes. “We obviously played a lot against each other in juniors, in a lot of local competitions or competitions around Great Britain, but yeah we haven’t played each other for a very long time.
“So it’ll be nice in some ways to do that but also it’s not easy. Serena and Venus [Williams] have obviously done it playing for Grand Slams and stuff and I can’t imagine how difficult that is.”
In singles today, Murray meets Tommy Robredo who beat Feliciano Lopez. Last week Murray was stunned in his first match in Washington.
“It always takes some time to get used to the hard courts again,” said Murray. “Not so much the tennis, but more in terms of how tough it is on the body, coming from clay and grass which are a little more forgiving. That’s the main thing that I need to adjust to.”
Djokovic plays during the day against Thomaz Bellucci. It’s his first match since his third Wimbledon title last month.
“I feel different this year than I did last year after Wimbledon and the wedding that I experienced,” he said. “That period of the year was a lot to take… beautiful experiences and dates I will always remember. Overall, on and off the court, it was probably the most remarkable year of my life. But I was exhausted and I came to Canada without being emotionally ready and recharged to compete at a high level.
“[This year] I took some rest that I looked forward to, that was very much necessary. At the time when I finished the Wimbledon final, I was looking to recharge my batteries, spend time with family.”
Also today, Canadian No. 1 Milos Raonic faces Ivo Karlovic in a match that will surely see a tiebreaker or two. Grigor Dimitrov takes on Alexandr Dolgopolov, qualifier Ernests Gulbis meets his practice partner Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios clashes with Fernando Verdasco.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga completes his match with Borna Coric. The two played just 13 minutes before the rains ended the day.
However, the rain that washed away play Monday in Toronto is expected to linger today in Montreal.
Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils, Donald Young, Gilles Muller and Bernard Tomic were among the Monday winners.
