Stan Wawrinka found himself serving down 0-30, 4-5 in the third set but the 2-time Grand Slam champion didn’t lose another game to beat a pesky Sergiy Stakhovsky 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round in Dubai.

“It’s good for my confidence but it was a tough first match,” said Wawrinka. “I was hesitating, always being behind, staying aggressive. And it’s tough to play especially against Stakhovsky, who doesn’t give you too much rhythm.

“But it’s a great win for me. Not playing well, still winning, still fighting, still finding a way. I was playing a little bit better at the end, trying to be the aggressive player on the court. It’s good to have a chance to play better tomorrow.”

Tomas Berdych also advanced defeated Joao Sousa 6-1, 6-4 and Nick Kyrgios followed up his maiden title in Marseille by upending the in-form Martin Klizan 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

On a big Wednesday schedule, 4-time champion and top seed Novak Djokovic returns to face Turkey’sTunisia’s Malek Jaziri. Berdych will face Thomas Fabbiano and Wawrinka meets qualifier Franco Skugor.

J-Kath Says:

Keep it up, Stan.

FlyingDoctor Says:

Malek jaziri is not from Turkey, from Tunisia

Daniel Says:

Djoko x Lopez semis could be a testof Lopez os serving well. Can’t see Djoko losing today nor semis agaisnt Baggy or Bautist Agut, so Lopez will be a test (maybe) and then final agaisnt Wawa or Kyrgios. If Berdy is in finals they don’t even have to olay the match. Even so, seema Novak will continue his winning streak and hopely tieing Lendl’s 18 final and maybe going one more for the Open Era record.

Daniel Says:

^^Djoko versus Lopez Quarters..

Daniel Says:

Another 6-1 6-2 victory for Novak. Lopez should win more games with his serve.
Oh, and congrats on 700 match wins😜🎾

Daniel Says:

Stan and Kyrgiosn won, just 1 more match for each and a semis clash and the winner taking Djoko in finals most likelly.

Van Persie Says:

Would like to see a Nole-Nick final

J-Kath Says:

Prefer to see Nole v Stan. More history there.

Van Persie Says:

Nole-Nick: no history at all :(..I am curious

Wog Boy Says:

Records can be deceiving, it is true, Lendel has 18 finals streak, but without playing one single GS in these 18 finals. His streak started after USO and ended before FO, he didn’t play AO, easy to conclude whose streak is more impressive, no?
That brings me back to 2011 and Nole’s streak when he fell short one match of John McEnroe streak. I remember than John McEnroe saying that, even Nole didn’t break his record, that Nole’s streak was more impressive than his considering who did Nole beat and titles he won.
