Rafael Nadal suffered a rare Masters early exit Wednesday in Shanghai falling to big-serving Serb Viktor Troicki 6-3, 7-6 in the second round.

Troicki, who was previously 0-5 against Rafa, walloped 11 aces with 31 winners and never dropped serve in the 94-minute match.

“I played really well,” said Troicki. “I was aggressive, I served well, I hit the ball nice.

“It was a great feeling on the court playing like this and playing like this against Rafa Nadal, who is a great champion. It makes it extra special to beat him for the first time, especially in such a big tournament like Shanghai.”

Nadal, who hinted his 2016 season could be over, had no answer for the Troicki power. “Hi serve was huge the whole the whole,” Nadal said. “He deserved to win more than me. I need to keep working, adjust things and be confident again.

“It’s the end of the season. It’s a tough part of the season for me, the tournament are difficult.”

Nadal’s loss was part of an upsetting day in Shanghai. Tomas Berdych fell to Marcel Granollers 7-6, 7-6, the hot Grigor Dimitrov was stunned by Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 7-6 and Nick Kyrgios tanked his way out of Shanghai after a poor 6-3, 6-1 loss to qualifier Mischa Zverev.

Andy Murray rolled into the third round beating American Steve Johnson 6-3, 6-2. Murray will now meet Wimbledon and US Open quarterfinalist Lucas Pouille. The Frenchman eliminated Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 7-6(10).

“I felt like I was creating a lot of chances on his serve. I thought I moved well for the first match in new conditions,โ€ Murray said. “I was timing the ball well. I felt like I was controlling a lot of the rallies. Yeah, for a first match after playing pretty different conditions a few days ago, it was good.”

Murray beat Pouille in their only meeting in the Rome semifinals earlier this year.

Feliciano Lopez lost to Jack Sock while Roberto Bautista Agut ended qualifier Taylor Fritz’s run. Milos Raonic and David Goffin were also winners.

On Thursday, 2015 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga takes on super teen Alexander Zverev. Novak Djokovic faces Pospisil and US Open champion Stan Wawrinka meets Gilles Simon.

17 Comments for Nadal, Berdych Bounced Out Of Shanghai; Djokovic, Murray-Pouille Thursday

dan Says:

Nadals finished he should hang up his racket

dan Says:

Hes had it retire Nadal

Van Persie Says:

Golden boy and his border, Mischa, are just playing in deciders.
Come on, Zverev!!

Van Persie Says:

Correction: his broder, not border

Daniel Says:

Hard to see Djoko or Murray losing with this QF and semis set ups. Maybe Tsonga can take Djoko out if in the zone for 2 sets in semis. Other than that we may have a Djoko x Murray final, which will be great eith recent talk of Andy might getting closer to #1. No better place to show it than beating the actual #1 player and defending champion. This is a tourney both like, although is Djoko show last 4 years basically.

Hope we get the blockbuster finals!

Danica Says:

Nole is fighting to secure the TB in the second. He lost the first. So, it’s more likely there will be someone else from his side in the finals.

Van Persie Says:

yep, but TB advantages the better server, …which was not Note today, I assume.

Van Persie Says:

Correction: not Nole

Danica Says:

Yes, I’ve sen a lot of “2nd serve” on the live score board when Nole serves. But it is 4:2 in TB and Nole has 2 serves. Let’s see how this set resolves.

Danica Says:

5:2 (pardon, Nole had 1 serve)

Van Persie Says:

haha,

it is hilarious: Danica, VPand J-K (a bit) are commenting on a match, that they are not seeing :)

Van Persie Says:

Ok, Djoko took the 2 set.
Decider now :)

Danica Says:

You’re right VP!! Lol :). All we need to know is score :)

Danica Says:

I may decide to let the decider decide itself :). It’s 2.00 am here and I am not sure I should be losing more sleep. Whoever wins, deserves the win.

Van Persie Says:

Good night, Danica!
Maybe I should also work a bit, before the weekend really starts.

J-Kath Says:

And me too….back to work – cheerie-by Danica – sleep well. VP: I hope your blood pressure is back to normal.

Van Persie Says:

Hehe J-K,

Well, I try to think like Nole these days and to watch “scores” without much pressure …but have to admit, I am not quite comfortable with a possible loss to Mischa :)
