Rafael Nadal collected his 10th straight match win beating Russian 21-year-old Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Beijing quarterfinals. Nadal, who won Beijing in 2005, won for a second time over Khachanov after Wimbledon.

Rafa will now meet John Isner who just beat the Spaniard in an exhibition match at the Laver Cup.

“Happy about the match today,” said Nadal. “I think I played a solid match. Tomorrow will be a tough one against Isner; he’s playing unbelievably well. I saw his match today. He played huge. So let’s see what’s going on tomorrow.”

Isner rolled past Leonardo Mayer scoring a rare bagel with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over the Argentine.

Alexander Zverev picked up his 50th win of the season with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Fabio Fognini. Next for Zverev us US Open quarterfinalist Andrey Rublev who edged Tomas Berdych in three sets.

“It’s obviously going to be an entertaining NextGen match,” said Zverev who beat Rublev at 2016 Monte Carlo 6-1, 6-3. “It’s obviously great to see young guys coming through, but tomorrow’s a match against him and I’m ready for it.”

In the other two Friday quarterfinals, which were set on Wednesday, Grigor Dimitrov duels Roberto Bautista Agut and Nick Kyrgios clashed with Steve Darcis.

In Tokyo, the quarterfinals pit Schwartzman-Johnson, Gasquet-Goffin, Cilic-Harrison, Sugita-Mannarino.

gonzalowski Says:

3 service games and Isner with 7 aces, (and resting very well). Rafa struggling, interesting match

gonzalowski Says:

Rafa playing very well, super-effective on the balls-to-play on Isner’s serve, 1st set for him.

Wog Boy Says:

Top notch tennis from Rafa.
To beat Isner who served 79% first serve with 22 aces in two sets you have to play your best tennis and Rafa did excatly that.

gonzalowski Says:

7-0 on TB for Rafa!!! anytime happened to John?
Perfect match from Rafa against a good Isner: 80% 1st serve the american, with 22 aces, and not bad rests – background playing

Okiegal Says:

Rafa got a good win today against the best server of all time…. Wowzer, the tiebreaker was SPECTACULAR!! Rafa played very good today……got to see vintage Rafa……Next up Grigor……Mr. Gorgeous!

Willow Says:

Hi Okie he was awesome, GG against Mr Invincible, i told Rafa to stay aggressive lol ….

Willow Says:

Rafa showed Isner who was boss where it mattered, Rafas in a different class to Mayer, the difference between the good and the greats of the game ….

Daniel Says:

Wow, 7-0 tiebreak agaisnt Isner is impressive, even if you have a string of great points. Next Dimi, who will fight but fold in the end as always. Nadal in finals to meet Zverev (who is crushing Rublev now) or Kyrgios.

Pulling for Kyrgios all the way. If he wins Beijing he gets 500 pts and will move to 14 in race (with Wawa and Djoko) ahead, so it will actually be 12. He would have a chance to qualify for WTF and we all know he likes to play big boys. Even f you dislike him his unpredictability would be nice inj WTF. More so than a Berdych, Agut or Anderson.

Dimi and Cilil adding points this week as well surpassing Wawa as 5 and 6 in race crsoing the 3100 pts benchmark, virtually shoe in for WTF togeher with Nadal, Federer, Zverev and Thiem. Basically 2 spots left.

Okiegal Says:

@Willow……Aggressive is the word………..he was on a mission for sure! I think he took the defeat by Isner at Laver Cup very serious……..sweet revenge was the order of the day!

VAMOS!!!!!

Mr. Obvious,

It cost me money. Ok, I take those things seriously.

Okiegal Says:

@Humble 1:12…..I take money serious too! 🤑🤑🤑
I ❤️ 💲🤠 the 🇺🇸 & a certain Spaniard!!! VAMOS RAFA!!

Nick’s at the crossroads. One direction puts him in the footsteps of Tomic. Known as the OTHER talented tool of Aussie tennis. The other way is the road that Kyrgios can take to be at least as well regarded as Rafter and Hewitt.
What is good is that in interviews recently he has expressed awareness that he knows this, and wants to be a success as a player and as a person.
