Svitolina Seeks First Title Of Year In San Jose; Venus, Anisimona In Field; Vandeweghe Makes Return
After finishing 2018 on the highest of notes winning the WTA Finals title, Elina Svitolina is still searching for that first crown in 2019.
The Wimbledon semifinalist is joined by a decent but not great field in San Jose which also includes former champion Victoria Azarenka and runner-ups Venus Williams and Coco Vandeweghe, who after an ankle injury, makes her return to tennis for a first time since last fall.
2019 breakout Americans Danielle Collins and Amanda Anisimova also are in the field. They could square off in the quarters.
Svitolina might face 2018 champion Mihaela Buzarnescu in the second round while Vandeweghe, who opens against Marie Bouzkova, would meet No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka in the second.
Projected quarterfinals: Svitolina-Sakkari, Anisimova-Collins, Vekic-Mertens, Saurez Navarro-Sabalenka.
Two-time Slam winner Garbine Muguruza withdrew with a leg injury. Three-time champion Serena Williams is not playing.
Last year, Buzarnescu beat Sakkari in a stunning 6-1, 6-0 final.
