After a 5+ month suspension, men’s tennis returns in New York for the first round of the Cincinnati Masters (played on the US Open site).

The 56-draw features the last four tournament champions along with 2-time winner Andy Murray.

The 33-year-old Murray will play his first match of 2020 today as he takes on young American Frances Tiafoe in a first meeting.

“I do feel there will be a lot of upsets,” said Murray of the first event. “Usually there’s a little bit more time to get used to the conditions… It’s just going to be different playing in front of no fans. I kind of felt that a little bit yesterday when I was walking through the grounds. It’s nice walking through to your practice courts, not getting stopped or anything, but then the atmosphere is just not the same without the people.”

2016 champion Marin Cilic also faces a tough test from a NextGenner. The Croat will try to end a 2-match losing streak to lefty Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

Shapovalov will be part of a big day for Canadians who will cheer remotely for Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Raonic. Having just turned 20, Auger-Aliassime will battle the big-hitting Georgian Nikolaz Basilashvili.

Raonic will test Sam Querrey.

The women lace up with a strong lineup which includes Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Coco Gauff.

Daniel Says:

So weird a set point won and no crowd noise. Murray steals the 1st set after falling behind in breaker. Great play so far.
Hope he keeps improving.

Also no line judges, probably a small advantage to big serves as the close “ace” out will be called good.

All things considered, nice to see some live high quality tennis matches again.

My goodness gracious – well done Andy Murray! Obviously not the end of your career quite yet.
