Medvedev A Winner On Grass, Answers Querrey In Mallorca
Daniil Medvedev’s last minute wildcard into Mallorca paid off. The Russian took home his first title on grass defeating Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-2.
The World No. 2 dropped just one set en route to his 11th career ATP title. He was in his first career grass final.
I’ve always liked playing on grass. Four years ago, I would say that it was my favorite surface. But after my results on hard courts I couldn’t say anything else other than hard courts, and I still like playing on hard courts more,” Medvedev said.
“It was important for me to get these things like titles going, because we don’t have a lot of tournaments [on this surface]. I’m happy to get this title, but I’m looking forward to the biggest challenge on grass, which is Wimbledon.”
Querrey, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, was seeking his first title since 2017 Los Cabos.
Medvedev will need the confidence for Wimbledon where as a No. 2 seed he opens against the man who beat him at Halle, Jan-Lennard Struff.
“Feels great because I came here trying to win some matches and I managed to do it. It’s always a good feeling and it gives you a lot of confidence,” Medvedev said. “Talking about Wimbledon or not, a title is a title. I’m very happy with my level, and I played my best match of the tournament today. Everything is only positive.”
