Paul Holds On For First ATP Title In Stockholm, Tops Shapovalov

Tommy Paul had the week of his life in Sweden closing out Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 to claim the Stockholm Open and win his first career ATP title.

Playing in his first tour final, the 24-year-old Paul used his legs and backhand to finally break through Shapovalov for 5-4 in the third, and then calmly served it out.

Paul had a remarkable run in Stockholm with consecutive upset wins over Taylor Fritz, Andy Murray, Frances Tiafoe and today Shapovalov. In in his first round, he defeated Borg…Leo Borg.


“I played some of my best tennis to beat Denis,” said Paul after. “It’s the most fun I’ve had playing a tennis tournament. It means everything to win my first title. I’ve worked so hard to achieve this and I’d like to break into the Top 30 at some point.”

Shapovalov was seeking his second straight Stockholm crown.
