Monfils Victorious Over Khachanov For Adelaide Title, First Australian Crown
Gael Monfils is already on the board with yet another January title. The Frenchman on Sunday took down Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-4 to claim the Adelaide title.
The win was Monfils’ 11th of his career, first in Australia and first since 2020 Rotterdam. He didn’t drop a set all week.
“I want to say thanks to my team,” the 35-year-old Monfils told the crowd. “We have had some tough moments, we lost a little bit of faith but we came back strong from July last year. It is amazing to play in front of you guys, to play in front of a full crowd with a good spirit and atmosphere, this is amazing.
“It is a great tournament,” he said. “I have been training here since 2009. I know the place very well, I love Adelaide and am very happy to win the title here.”
The Frenchman’s last five titles have come in either January or February.
“Last year was very tough for me,” Monfils added. “I almost, let’s not say want to quit, but lost my faith in tennis. But Elina was there. Thank you Elina, thank you for everything.”
