It was an emotional night for Juan Martin Del Potro yesterday in the first round at Buenos Aires.

In what was his first match since 2019 Queen’s, the Argentine great’s return didn’t go so well. Del Potro fell to countryman Federico Delbonis 6-1, 6-3.

Serving to stay in the match down 5-3 in the second, Del Potro’s emotions got the best of him.

“It’s difficult to explain how I felt on the court. So many emotions,” he said. “The atmosphere was crazy, the people were crazy, and I had one of my best ever matches in my career with the crowd.”

He gave one last message as he left the court: “I don’t know if it’s going to happen, because the pain in my knee is very high. But I will keep doing a big effort to fix the knee, and if I get that, maybe I will have another chance to play.”

Del Potro is slated to play in Rio, but he admitted after the match he wasn’t sure.

PK Says:

So he’s not retiring after all? And planning another comeback?

Whatever happened to gracious retirement in professional tennis where former greats would saunter off to play the senior circuit and take care of their cash hoard?
