Novak Djokovic Is In The Indian Wells Draw, But Can He Get Into The U.S.?
After expressing doubts on being able to play in the U.S., Novak Djokovic is in the just-released Indian Wells draw.
Djokovic didn’t withdraw from the event perhaps with hopes of somehow getting in the U.S. despite being unvaccinated. The U.S. is easing restrictions, but enough for the Serb to sneak in?
The tournament even put out a statement explain his ENTRY (not withdrawal)!
“Novak Djokovic is on the tournament entry list, and therefore is placed into the draw today. We are currently in communication with his team; however, it has not been determined if he will participate in the event by getting CDC approval to enter the country,” the tournament tweeted.
So get ready for another 4-5 days of deportation talk, court battles, hearings and more 24/7 Djokovic drama. For now, Djokovic is not in the U.S. and per the tournament, in discussions with the CDC about getting in.
If Djokovic does get in, he would surely be allowed to play in Miami. For Djokovic, it’s important to just get into the U.S.
Djokovic is now No. 2 and has been placed on the bottom of the draw. World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev is on top.
If he plays, Djokovic could run into former semifinalist David Goffin, then either Andy Murray or Alexander Bublik. He also avoided Rafael Nadal as a potential semifinalist, instead landing Alexander Zverev in his half.
Nadal could face Medvedev in the semifinals. Medvedev drew Gael Monfils in his third round, Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth and either Stefanos Tsitsipas or defending champion Cameron Norrie in the quarters.
Nadal, 15-0 on the year, could open against his practice partner Sebastian Korda. He’s slated to face Denis Shapovalov or Reilly Opelka in the fourth with Casper Ruud or Jannik Sinner in the quarters.
