After two rough rounds, 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas had a welcomed easy afternoon at the French Open as the Greek hammered fellow 23-year-old Miakel Ymer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

“A lot of good rallies from my side,” said Tsitsipas on court. “I have a long history with Mikael, playing in juniors, and we’ve played each other a lot. I would like to congratulate him on his great effort, he had a good run to the third round once more. It was a good game from my side. I played really well and topped it off with some really good, patient tennis.”

Tsitsipas has now won nine of his last 10 matches at the French Open.

Next will be someone even younger as Holger Rune reached his first Slam fourth round cruising past the last of the French players Hugo Gaston 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Rune, who just turned 19, has won 11 of his last 13 matches and in his French Open debut, the Dane hasn’t dropped a set.

No. 2 seed Daniil Medvedev also hasn’t dropped a set as the Russian cruised past an in-form Miomir Kecmanovic 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 to earn one of his best wins on his least favorite surface.

“Was a great match against a tough opponent,” said Medvedev in his post-match press conference. “To be honest, before the match, I would never have thought I could make this score happen on clay courts.

“Everything I wanted to do today worked. I was serving great. I feel like I was almost putting all the returns in and I made his life tough. Maybe he didn’t play his best level, I managed from my side to make his life as tough as possible, and it was enough to win today.”

Medvedev will now face fellow US Open champion Marin Cilic after Cilic crushed Gilles Simon in his final French Open match.

Andrey Rublev advanced in a tough four sets over Cristian Garin. He’ll face Jannik Sinner who saved 11 second set points against Mackenzie McDonald to take a straight set win.

Casper Ruud stayed alive and kept all Top 8 seeds in the in final 16 by winning in 5 over Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 6-7(3), 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Ruud becomes the first player from Norway to make the French fourth round. He’ll try to take it a step further Monday against Hubert Hurkacz who eliminated David Goffin in straights.

The big favorites return Sunday for fourth round play. Novak Djokovic faces longtime for Diego Schwartzman. He leads the Argentine 6-0.

Rafael Nadal returns after watching his Real Madrid team win the Champions League title. He’ll meet Felix Auger Aliassime who is coached by his uncle, Toni Nadal.

5 Comments for Medvedev, Tsitsipas Dominate While Ruud Needs 5 At French Open; Nadal, Djokovic 1 Win From QF

zed Says:

Watching the Novak v Schwartzman match and it’s the third set with Novak leading 5/2, Novak won the first two sets 6/1 6/3.

I’ve got to say, Novak just seems to be getting stronger with each match. If he wins and if Rafa beats FAA then the Novak/Rafa match will be awesome.

Last year it was Novak beating the King of Clay, can Novak do it again two years in a row? If he does, what does that say?

zed Says:

It’s done.

6/1, 6/3, 6/3. Novak on cruise control.

As long as he’s not sabotaged again in the remaining 2 or 3 years (maybe 4) that he has ahead of him one can only guess how high his Grand Slam tally will get.

I’m taking bets :)

All Out Says:

Nadal is struggling to hold serve and his returns are erratic across the 4 sets. Credit to Felix though. He has really bullied Nadal in most of the rallies. If this is the level Nadal produced in the quarters, its an ugly straight sets loss to Novak not unlike 2015.
If Felix wins, he’ll be too tired to play against Novak in the quarters.
If alcaraz makes it to the semis, it’ll be interesting. We could have a new champion this year. Whatever the case, I think nadal’s reigning days in Paris are officially over.

zed Says:

All Out, you have to hand it to Felix, the kid is a fighter.

Rafa had to work to win that match and he’s going to need the rest between now and the Qtr with Novak.

Conversely, Novak looked fresh, efficient and cruised through his match.

If Novak does beat Rafa again, which I think he will, then I hope it won’t be a bruising 5 setter. Novak’s going to need energy to beat Alcaraz, the kid won’t be the least bit tired, who is at 19?

Giles Says:

Wouldn’t expect anything less from Felix. After all he is being coached by the best in the business!!
